  • Publication number: 20090147176
Abstract: In a scanning backlight for an LCD display, several backlights (101, 102, 103, 10n) provide a precisely positioned dimming pulse corresponding to a transition point of the LCD screen. The dimming pulse must be variable with video synchronization frequency and dimming duty cycle, which is a performance intensive calculation. One microcontroller performing this operation is limited in scope. By using several ballast controllers (141, 142, 143, 14n), the solution is scalable, in that it is flexible if the number of backlights (101, 102, 103, 10n) changes. Additionally, by using several controllers (141, 142, 143, 14n), added functions can be performed by the ballast controllers (141, 142, 143, 14n).

  • Publication number: 20090099420
Abstract: The present invention relates, generally, to the reduction or elimination of permanent and catastrophic herniations in Bowden cables or coil pipes in articulating devices or snake-like robots. More particularly, the present invention relates managing the coil pipes in a spiral pattern along the articulating device or snake-like robot to reduce or eliminate the necessity of the Bowden cables or coil pipes to slide along the length of the articulating device or snake-like robot. Reduction or elimination of the necessity for the Bowden cables or coil pipes to slide reduces or eliminates catastrophic herniations in articulating devices or snake-like robots undergoing one or more articulations.

  • Publication number: 20090056133
Abstract: A process for forming an integrated multiplex electrospray includes forming multiple holes in a ring extractor substrate to create a ring extractor. A nozzle array having multiple nozzles each nozzle defining a central axis is provided. A spacer layer is bonded to either the ring extractor or the nozzle array to form a bonded stack. The bonded stack is then aligned with remaining layer to align each of the multiple nozzles with one of the plurality of holes to less than 10 microns from concentric and the spacer layer then bonded intermediate between the ring extractor and the nozzle array layer. The spacer layer is then etched to provide fluid communication between multiple nozzles and the multiple holes of the ring extractor and form the spacer.

  • Patent number: 7472533
Abstract: A crop harvesting header with a cutter bar and a draper assembly has a draper canvas with a plurality of transverse slats with a resilient strip across a front edge of the outer surface in front of the front end of the slats to cooperate with a rearwardly projecting element of the cutter bar extending over the upper run of the draper canvas to engage the upper surface of said strip to form a seal to inhibit entry between the cutter bar and the draper canvas of materials carried by the cut crop. There is also provided a bead on the canvas on the surface opposite the strip within the width of the strip. The arrangement can be symmetrical with a strip at each of the front and rear edges spanned by the slats extending between them, with beads on each edge opposite the front and rear strips respectively.

  • Publication number: 20080225504
Abstract: In an igniter module housing (F) of an automotive headlamp assembly, an improved EMI shielding includes a thin coating (12) on the housing. This arrangement eliminates the need for separate EMI shielding components. The coating is electrically conductive, typically a metal such as aluminum, and may be sputtered, painted, or dipped onto the plastic substrate at a thickness of approximately 3 microns or less. The total weight of the aluminum coating is on the order of 1 milligram.

  • Patent number: 7420336
Abstract: The embodiment disclosed herein relates to systems and methods to provide improvements to power delivery systems employed with lamps in general and fluorescent lamps in particular. In accordance with one exemplary embodiment, cathode current is controlled to a maximum level to quickly bring the cathode temperature up to thermionic emission temperature. After lamp ignition, a cathode voltage reduction circuit is employed to reduce voltage of the external cathode heating. Power is supplied to a power factor correction circuit via an IC, in accordance with a second exemplary embodiment. Finally, a third disclosed embodiment addresses desensitizing the lamp from various deleterious parasitic capacitive effects associated with the power delivery to one or more lamps.

  • Publication number: 20080157694
Abstract: A new ballast circuit for automotive high intensity discharge (HID) applications is disclosed. The ballast utilizes two DC/DC converters and two low frequency inverter switches. The ballast also includes an integrated high voltage ignition circuit. The positive DC/DC converter builds up a high ignition voltage in addition to raising the DC positive bus. When the lamp breaks down, the DC bus voltage decreases and the ignition circuit falls inactive. The DC/DC stages are then alternately conductive to supply power to the lamp via the low frequency inverter switches. The disclosed ballast reduces the number of switches used to four from a typical six, it utilizes independently controlled voltage sources, and provides a more efficient run-up voltage waveform during pre-steady state running of the lamp.

  • Patent number: 7315306
Abstract: A data-display system employs a display in which the representations of data objects are caused to move on the display in order to convey information about the represented data objects. In one example, icons in a link-analysis display that represent data objects satisfying a selection criterion are made to execute distinctive motion. In another example, three-dimensional models of moving bodies in whose features components of respective data objects are encoded are projected onto a screen plane, and the resultant values are used to generate the display.

  • Publication number: 20070270650
Abstract: The present invention relates, generally, to reporting the approximate three-dimensional orientation of the steerable distal portion of an endoscope to the user of the endoscope. More particularly, the present invention relates to a system and method for providing the endoscope-user a display from which to more easily determine the approximate three-dimensional orientation of the steerable distal portion of the endoscope, thereby facilitating navigation of the endoscope. The present invention also relates to a system and method for limiting the amount the steerable distal portion can bend overall to reduce or eliminate the user's ability to over-retroflex the steerable distal portion of the endoscope.

  • Publication number: 20070259417
Abstract: In order to obtain a novel binding protein against a chosen target, DNA molecules, each encoding a protein comprising one of a family of similar potential binding domains and a structural signal calling for the display of the protein on the outer surface of a chosen bacterial cell, bacterial spore or phage (genetic package) are introduced into a genetic package. The protein is expressed and the potential binding domain is displayed on the outer surface of the package. The cells or viruses bearing the binding domains which recognize the target molecule are isolated and amplified. The successful binding domains are then characterized. One or more of these successful binding domains is used as a model for the design of a new family of potential binding domains, and the process is repeated until a novel binding domain having a desired affinity for the target molecule is obtained.

  • Publication number: 20070260519
Abstract: Described herein are methods and apparatus for measuring the effect of an online advertisement campaign on online behavior (searches relevant to the campaign and/or click activity on particular sponsored, algorithmic, and/or third-party links) of exposed users who have received a campaign advertisement. Online events of exposed and unexposed users are logged during a pre-campaign period (before any users receive any campaign advertisements) and a campaign period (when exposed users receive a campaign advertisement). A variety of behavior measurements and metrics may be determined using the logged user events. A metric may indicate the difference of an online activity between exposed and unexposed users during the campaign period or between exposed users during the pre-campaign and campaign periods. A metric may indicate the campaign's effect on an online activity by exposed users during the pre-campaign and campaign period in comparison to the online activity by unexposed users during the same periods.
