Publication number: 20110064926Abstract: A low-cost combined board without corrugated medium is disclosed that has enhanced surface properties and bending stiffness. In certain embodiments the combined board has a surface suitable for high quality printing and without the characteristic lines that are apparent on the surface of the conventional corrugated board. The combined board includes at least two paperboards adhered together by an adhesive formulation. The adhesive formulation may comprise one or more of an adhesive component, a foaming component, and filler. The adhesive may be a pattern of adhesive comprising strands of adhesive with a diameter range of about 2 points to about 20 points. When desired, the adhesive formulation may include a spacer component to control the distance between the paper board layers in the disclosed combined board. The adhesive may include hard fillers to further enhance the bending stiffness and reduce the adhesive cost.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 14, 2009Publication date: March 17, 2011Applicant: MEADWESTVACO CORPORATIONInventors: Vladislav A. Babinsky, Bruce W. Babcock

Publication number: 20100314060Abstract: A premium colored paper having high contrast suitable for high-end packaging applications is produced through a controlled penetration of a coloring formulation through the paper. The paper is coated on a first side with a first coloring formulation. Then, a second coloring formulation is applied to a second side (i.e. opposite side) of the paper such that the coloring agent in the second coloring formulation penetrates through the paper sheet but does not significantly interfere with the color or brightness of the first coated side of paper. When desired, the first coloring formulation may be applied on the paper on-line during papermaking process.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 12, 2009Publication date: December 16, 2010Applicant: MEADWESTVACO CORPORATIONInventors: Vladislav A. Babinsky, Bruce W. Babcock, Robinson C. Claytor

Patent number: 7491293Abstract: A multi-layered paperboard having a high brightness and exceptional uniformity. The white topped paperboard has a base layer(s) made from wood pulp and a top fibrous layer made of unbleached wood fiber, filler and a binder to create a top fibrous layer of sufficient uniformity at moderate brightness levels. The top fibrous layer optionally contains a coagulant and/or a retention aid. In a preferred embodiment, the top fibrous layer of the multi-layered paperboard product is coated with a coating of additional fillers and binders to produce the desired level of brightness and uniformity. The invention also includes a process for making a multi-layered paperboard.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2005Date of Patent: February 17, 2009Assignee: MeadWestvaco CorporationInventors: Bruce W. Babcock, Tricia W. Thomas

Publication number: 20030091761Abstract: A printable composite paperboard product exhibiting thicknesses of from 0.026 to 0.044 inches, with corresponding stiffness and compression strength, is disclosed for printable packaging materials of substantial density and compressive strength for products in need of a barrier layer. The invention product is made by a process whereby a thinner bleached (white) paper sheet product is laid atop a thicker unbleached paper product. The topmost sheet layer may be one of a variety of materials including, but not limited to, fine papers and bleached paperboard; whereas, the bottom layer may be one of a variety of materials including, but not limited to, an unbleached folding carton board. Also disclosed is a box formed of the disclosed paperboard product.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 19, 2002Publication date: May 15, 2003Applicant: Westvaco CorporationInventors: Bruce W. Babcock, Leroy E. Calhoun, Louis R. Hancock, Rebecca A. LePosa
