  • Patent number: 8114003
Abstract: A centrifugal blood processing apparatus comprising a centrifuge rotor, a separation chamber, a tubing set for conducting blood components and fluids and having an inlet line, and an outlet line. Apparatus tests flow conditions using a red light-green light sensor to detect non-recoverable hemolysis during priming by identifying a high R/G ratio, preferably a ratio of greater than or equal to fifty (50), prior to the beginning of the first return of blood components to a donor followed by identifying a R/G ratio at least as great as one and one tenth (1.1) together with a green signal less than a predetermined value, preferably less than or equal to one thousand (1000) reflectance units. If these conditions are detected, an alarm is given and the apheresis procedure is discontinued.

  • Publication number: 20110152740
Abstract: A method and apparatus for red blood collection and filtration is provided wherein a red blood cell collection assembly provides for leukoreduction filtration concurrent with or soon after the red blood cell separation and collection procedure. After red blood cells have been collected, an unwanted blood component, e.g., buffy coat, is diverted into the red blood cell collect line. Operation of a peristaltic pump engaging pump loop allows insertion of a pre-determined quantity of buffy coat into the collect line. The buffy coat can therefore push red blood cells out of the filter and into a collect bag without diluting the collected red blood cells. Alternatively, gravitational force may be used to allow the unwanted blood component to displace red blood cells out of the filter.

  • Patent number: 7789847
Abstract: A method and apparatus for red blood collection and filtration is provided wherein a red blood cell collection assembly provides for leukoreduction filtration concurrent with or soon after the red blood cell separation and collection procedure. Such procedures involve filtering the separated red blood cells in a diluted state after and/or prior to flushing the filter with storage solution. Storage solution may thus be passed through the leukoreduction filter before, with and/or after the RBCs have been filtered therethrough. The red blood cell collection, filtration and storage assembly is preferably preconnected to a blood component separation disposable assembly, including, for example, a centrifuge vessel and a blood removal/return assembly for removing blood from a donor, passing the blood to the centrifuge vessel for separation of the blood into components for collection and providing for filtration of the separated red blood cell component.

  • Patent number: 7651474
Abstract: A method and apparatus for red blood collection and filtration is provided wherein a red blood cell collection assembly provides for leukoreduction filtration concurrent with or soon after the red blood cell collection procedure. The procedure preferably involves filtering the separated red blood cells in a high hematocrit (high-crit) state prior to addition of storage solution thereto. Preferably, a storage solution is passed through the leukoreduction filter after the RBCs have been filtered therethrough. The red blood cell collection filtration and storage assembly is preferably preconnected to a blood component separation disposable assembly, including, for example, a centrifuge vessel and a blood removal/return assembly for removing blood from a donor, passing the blood to the centrifuge vessel for separation of the blood into components for collection and providing for filtration of the separated red blood cell component, as described.

  • Patent number: 5936714
Abstract: An apparatus and a method are provided to monitor a generally transparent blood tube at a location that is downstream from a blood separator in order to detect the presence of red blood cells in a tube that is intended to carry a different blood component, for example platelets. A red light source and a green light source are located in relation to the tube so that red light emission and green light emission are directed toward the tube and toward the flowing blood component(s) that is carried within the tube. The red light source produces a red reflection intensity from red blood cells whose magnitude increases as a function of an increase in the concentration of red blood cells. The green light source produces a green reflection intensity from the red blood cells whose magnitude decreases as a function of an increase in the concentration of the red blood cells.
