A roll form apparatus includes a roll former device and a sweep station in-line with the roll former device for sweeping the continuous beam in first and second opposing directions.     Abstract: A computer controlled roll-forming apparatus is adapted to provide a repeating pattern of different longitudinal shapes to a continuous beam “on the fly” during the roll-forming process. A sweep station of the apparatus includes a primary bending roller tangentially engaging the continuous beam along the line level and an armature for biasing the continuous beam against the primary bending roller for a distance partially around a downstream side of the primary bending roller to form a sweep. Actuators adjustably move the armature partially around the downstream side of the primary bending roller between multiple positions for imparting a series of different longitudinal shapes. Internal and external mandrels control wall stability to allow even sharper sweeps. In one form, the apparatus also includes a coordinated cut-off, so that when separated into bumper beam segments, the ends of the individual beam segments have a greater sweep than their center sections.

    Abstract: A method includes steps of providing round tubing, providing a compression box and wedging dies, and reshaping the round tubing into a single or double-tapered rectangular tube including using the compression box to control an outside shape, while using the wedging dies to force material of the tubing outwardly toward the compression box. This arrangement minimizes material thinning. A tubular crushable structure is produced that is designed for longitudinal impact-energy-absorbing capability. The crushable structure includes a single or double-tapered rectangular tube made of material having a tensile strength of at least 40 KSI. In a narrower form the tensile strength is at least 80 KSI, though it can be 100 KSI or higher.

The front and back sections combine to define different tubular cross sections along their length, thus providing selected stiffness and strength at critical areas of the bumper beam. The front section can be roll-formed, and the back section can be stamped, thus taking advantage of roll-forming processes' ability to form high-strength materials, while allowing the back section to have a more complicated shape and be stamped. For example, the back section can be made from a material selected from a group consisting of HSLA steel, aluminum, and/or polymeric material. The back section is attached to the beam using welding or mechanical attachment.

    Abstract: A novel belt pack system includes a pack having an adjustable length belt attached thereto. An adjustable length, three-point stabilizer strap arrangement is connected to each side of the pack and belt. A water bottle and its associated carrier, a carrier for carrying items such as a cassette tape player or the like and/or a fold-up bag can be attached to the belt. The belt has a fastener material, such as known hook and loop material or other means such as snaps and the like, on a surface thereof. The pack has a first, main compartment which is large enough to hold a pair of shoes and a smaller compartment which is separated from the main compartment for carrying keys, a shirt, etc. When worn, the belt extends around the waist of a wearer and the pack abuts the wearer's small of the back. The pack may include an outer compartment formed of a mesh material which is separated from the interior compartments by an outer wall of the pack.
