  • Patent number: 6926582
Abstract: A system and method for burnishing the edges and corners of hard disk drive sliders uses a combination of flexible tape fixturing and mechanical protrusions located beneath the tape to systematically orient selected slider corners and edges to be exposed to an abrasive in a flexible manner. This solution carefully exposes the sliders even when there is very little clearance between the sliders. A variety of different rounding geometries are achieved by customizing the protrusions underneath the flexible tape. Multiple slider corners and/or edges are exposed to the abrasive at one time for bulk processing. The sliders are oriented in such a way that sensitive structures located on the air bearing surfaces of the sliders are not harmed during burnishing.

  • Patent number: 5987725
Abstract: An apparatus, method, and article of manufacture to separate a slider from a slider row in which it was manufactured. The apparatus comprises an articulating robot including a stage which may be moved in X-Y coordinate directions and an articulating arm that may be used to place rows of sliders on the stage. The articulating arm incorporates a rotating effectuator unit mounted at the end of the arm, the effectuator being used to pick up individual slider rows, the tray in which they sit when first introduced to the robot, or any other item that needs to be positioned during the alignment of the rows. The apparatus includes sensors and a processing unit that may be used to detect and determine dimensional characteristics of an ABS surface of a slider integral to the row. The apparatus may also include a parting device for separating the slider from the row. In performing the method, a slider row is positioned on the stage in a manner that allows the ABS surface of a slider to be sensed by the sensors.

  • Patent number: 5896729
Abstract: A container for shipping and handling devices is described. The container is particularly well suited to store sliders used in magnetic storage systems. The container includes a bottom piece and a detachable top piece. The bottom piece includes a base with a channel (also referred to as a device chamber) and two side walls. At least one device is stored in a channel in the base. The detachable top piece is secured to the bottom piece with a locking device. The locking device may include two substantially straight edges and two curved outer ridges. When the top piece is attached to the bottom piece, each of the curved outer ridges of the locking device extends into a groove in the inner surface of the side walls. The devices are contained within the container by a pair of slider stop devices.
