  • Patent number: 5150516
Abstract: Connectors for optical cables in ribbon form and a process for making such connectors in which metal plates for the enclosing the cable ends are made by cold, plastic flow forming of grooves in the plates with a punch having ridges produced by a process which produces grooves which hold the positions of the optical fibers between the plates within narrow tolerances. In the process, a punch body with partially formed ridges is mounted on a head rotatable about the axis of the body and movable toward a grinding wheel which is movable in a path perpendicular to the direction of movement of the head toward the grinding wheel. After two opposite passes of the grinding wheel along the side of a ridge, the punch body is rotated 180 degrees, and the side of a corresponding ridge on the opposite side of the punch body axis is ground. The process is repeated with movement of the head toward the grinding wheel, which is measured, until the sides of all ridges are ground.

  • Patent number: 5129027
Abstract: A drawing head for ribbon type optical cables having optical fibres in ribbons with respective end connectors, a central strength member and a grooved core includes a drawing member connected at one end thereof to the axial strength member of the cable and at the other end thereof to a pulling and grasping member, which drawing member is surrounded by a flexible body. The drawing member has a length corresponding to a predetermined fibre ribbon length required for establishing cable connections, and the flexible body is provided with grooves adapted to accommodate the fibre ribbons disposed in alignment with the grooves of the cable core. The flexible body is followed by a deformable supporting body surrounding the drawing member and which can be deformed by the connector to provide longitudinally separated and aligned recesses for receiving the end connectors of the ribbons of each ribbon group accommodated in a given groove.

  • Patent number: 5093881
Abstract: A pair of interengageable connectors for interconnecting optical fiber tape or ribbon cables which have a plurality of parallel optical fibers within a relatively thin and wide covering. Each connector has a ferrule formed by semicylindrical elements with engaging and axially extending planar faces. One end of the elements is a coupling face, and the planar faces have grooves extending axially from the coupling face for receiving the fibers with the covering removed and a recess remote from the coupling face for receiving the fibers with the covering thereon. The elements are held together by a sleeve which extends from at or adjacent the coupling face toward the other end of the ferrule. A ring nut with teeth for engaging corresponding teeth of the other connector encircles the sleeve and the ferrule and is slidable axially with respect thereto. A spring urges the ring nut toward the end of the ferrule remote from the coupling face.

  • Patent number: 5037179
Abstract: An interconnect system for ribbon-joined optical fibers includes two connectors (1, 2) integrally attached to the ends of respective optical fiber ribbons (3, 4), in which each connector (1, 2) consists of a pair of coupled metal plates (5) rigidly fastened to each other, between which two or more optical fibers (7) belonging to a ribbon (3, 4) made of parallel optical fibers as well as alignment plugs (10) are clamped. At least a plate (5) in each connector (1, 2) includes an element made of metallic material in which several housing grooves (6, 9) for the optical fibers (7) of the ribbon (3, 4) and for the alignment plugs (10) are formed by cold plastic deformation using the same punch for all the plates belonging to one series.

  • Patent number: 4889399
Abstract: An optical fiber expanded beam connector in which a spherical lens is held between a conical seat on a sleeve and a conical seat on a support for the bared optical fiber, the support being within the sleeve and having an external diameter less than the internal diameter of the sleeve to provide clearance therebetween which permits the support to move radially with respect to the axis of the sleeve. The fiber with its covering is secured to a body within the sleeve, the body being secured to the sleeve. In one embodiment, the support is a ferrule within a bushing which is secured to the body, the length of the bushing from the conical seat being large relative to the radial thickness of the clearance. In another embodiment, the support is a ferrule urged toward the lens by a spring between the ferrule and the body.

  • Patent number: 4846544
Abstract: A connector for connecting an optical fiber to another optical fiber or other optical signal receiving device, the connector having an elongated body with a central bore which is larger than the optical fiber with a protective layer thereon so that the latter freely slides in the bore. The body also has a pair of spaced reference elements or shoulders on its exterior surface, and a bushing with elastic fingers encircles the portion of the body with the shoulders and is longitudinally slidable between positions in which it engages one shoulder or the other shoulder. The bushing also has a ferrule with a bore for the passage of the bare optical fiber. Also, a method for accurately positioning the fiber in the connector, in which the fiber is cut while it extends from the ferrule and the bushing engages the shoulder farther from the cut, and the bushing is then moved so that it engages the other shoulder and is secured to the body.

  • Patent number: 4842438
Abstract: Method for joining thermoplastic cores having spaced, longitudinal surface grooves for receiving optical fibers or electrical wires. A heat shrinkable plastic sleeve is applied over the end of one of the cores. A piece of a core selected so that the ends of the grooves match, at each end, the grooves of the cores to be joined, is inserted between the ends of the cores in abutting relation with the cores, and malleable metal elements, longer than the piece and having the cross-sectional shape of the grooves are inserted in the grooves of the piece with the ends thereof in the grooves of the cores. The sleeve is slid over the elements-piece assembly and heated so that it shrinks therearound, so that the plastic of the piece and the cores is softened and the grooves conform to the shape of and embed the elements and so that the ends of the piece fuse with the ends of the cores.

  • Patent number: 4690496
Abstract: A method of forming a connection between a pair of optical fiber cables, each cable having an optical fiber surrounded by a plurality of protective coverings, in which method the optical fiber of each cable is bared by removing the coverings adjacent the cable ends and the optical fibers are joined by conventional cutting and melting. Thereafter, the space between the ends of the coverings are filled by a moisture impervious coating on the bared fibers, longitudinal non-metallic filaments or filament on the coating, helically wound non-metallic filaments or filament around the longitudinal filament or filaments, the helically wound filament or filaments be covered by an adhesive, and an elastomeric layer, which sets up at temperatures which are low with respect to temperatures used to extrude elastomeric materials, around the helically wound filament.
