Abstract: A stabilizer for a submersible pump in a well bore is attached to the pump so that it extends from the lower end of the pump toward the bottom of the well. When placed in the well, the stabilizer engages sandy debris in the well and thereby positions the pump vertically, while at the same time providing resistance to lateral and torsional forces caused by on-off cycling of the pump. One embodiment of the stabilizer further has expansible means which are actuated by contact of the device with the well bottom; the expansible part provides additional lateral and torsional support when the pump is in place, but conveniently retracts for easy removal of the pump as it is lifted.
