  • Patent number: 8137422
Abstract: A process for producing a hydrogen-containing product gas with reduced carbon dioxide emissions compared to conventional hydrogen production processes. A hydrocarbon and steam are reformed in a reformer and the resulting reformate stream is shifted in one or more shift reactors. The shifted mixture is scrubbed to remove carbon dioxide to form a carbon dioxide-depleted stream. The carbon dioxide-depleted stream is separated to form a hydrogen-containing product gas and a by-product gas. A portion of the hydrogen containing product gas is used as a fuel in the reformer and a portion of the by-product gas is recycled back into the process. The process may optionally include reforming in a prereformer and/or an oxygen secondary reformer.

  • Patent number: 7824655
Abstract: In a process for producing a hydrogen-containing gas, a hydrocarbon feed gas and steam are introduced into a reaction vessel containing a complex metal oxide and steam-hydrocarbon reforming catalyst thereby forming a combustible gas mixture comprising hydrogen. A regeneration gas comprising greater than 0.1 volume % oxygen up to and including 2 volume % oxygen is introduced into the reaction vessel to displace at least a portion of the combustible gas mixture from the reaction vessel. Subsequently, additional regeneration gases may be introduced into the reaction vessel. Numerous means for providing various regeneration gases are presented.

  • Patent number: 7074034
Abstract: This invention is a directed to combustion apparatus incorporating a combustion chamber, a precombustion chamber and a multi-wall burner and a process for effecting combustion of gases, particularly feed gases containing gases that, on combustion, form solid oxidation products, i.e., solid-forming gases. A pathway is formed between the exterior of the precombustion chamber and the interior of said combustion chamber, whereby said pathway permits introduction of a secondary oxidant into the interior portion of the combustion chamber for facilitating combustion of said solid forming gas.

  • Patent number: 6582218
Abstract: An oxy-fuel burner is set forth for providing combustion energy to a glass furnace via the mixing and combustion of a fuel stream and an oxidizer stream. The burner is divided into at least two sections, a substantially vertical section beginning at the bottom or feed end of the burner and a generally shorter, substantially horizontal section terminating at the opposite or discharge end of the burner. In a key embodiment, the vertical section of the burner protrudes into the furnace atmosphere through the underside of an air port, while the horizontal section is pointed toward the interior of the furnace. Depending on the number of burners installed, this allows from partial to full conversion of an air fuel furnace to an oxy-fuel furnace. Also, in a key embodiment, the burner includes an oxidant staging means to introduce oxidizer through a staging conduit running beneath and collateral with the outer conduit.

  • Patent number: 6524097
Abstract: Method and apparatus for continuation of combustion with an oxy-fuel combustion system when the supply of oxygen is temporally reduced or stopped. Air or oxygen enriched air and fuel are introduced into the device being heated in place of the oxy-fuel mixture to effect combustion and maintain the heating level in the furnace. Water cooling of the furnace gases is used to reduce the volume of exhaust gases when operating in the air or oxygen enriched air mode.

  • Patent number: 6519973
Abstract: A process and furnace for melting glass is set forth wherein the majority of the combustion energy over the melting zone of the furnace is provided by oxy-fuel combustion while a majority of the combustion energy over the fining zone of the furnace is provided by air-fuel combustion. In many cases, it will be preferable to provide greater than 70% and up to and including 100% of the combustion energy over the melting zone by oxy-fuel combustion and greater than 70% and up to and including 100% of the combustion energy over the fining zone by air-fuel combustion. By proper tailoring of the combustion space atmosphere through oxy-fuel and air-fuel firing, the present invention can result in an improvement in glass productivity and quality. The present invention can be applied in the construction of a new furnace or can be applied to existing air-fuel furnaces.
