The first portion defines a wedge that is configured to produce a separation force between the mattress and base to hold the retainer in position. The first portion may further define a bed-cover-engaging member, such as a high-friction surface, to hold the bed cover in position. A sleeper attendant may be supported at a second portion. The sleeper attendant is adapted to support an object in a manner that the object is accessible to a sleeper on the bed.
