Patent number: 7957847Abstract: Voltage regulating systems are provided that adjust their output control signals in response to feed-forward information that is indicative of deterministic changes in the load current. A feed-forward circuit provides a feed-forward signal in response to an input signal generated from a source that is external to the voltage regulating system. The voltage regulator systems can proactively respond to the predictive information by adjusting their output, thereby improving the regulation tolerance to dynamic loading. As an example, the feed-forward information can include signals indicating multiple deterministic events that affect the load. Signals from multiple events can be summed together to generate a feed-forward term. Patent number: 7595953Abstract: A magnetic recording disk drive has compensation for both mechanical disturbances and electrical disturbances. The disk drive's servo control system includes mechanical disturbance (MD) feedforward compensation and electrical disturbance (ED) feedforward compensation, of which either or both can be selectively enabled and disabled. In the operation of the disk drive, it is first determined that there is some disturbance that is causing track misregistration (TMR). The system is then tested to determine if the ED is greater than an ED threshold by measuring an averaged ED sensor signal. If ED is greater than the ED threshold, the system is then tested for a reduction in TMR by selectively turning MD compensation and ED compensation on and off, and determining changes in the position error signal (PES). Patent number: 6560057Abstract: A disk drive includes a read/write head mounted on an actuator, a disk having an inner diameter region and an outer diameter region, the head being radially movable by the actuator between the inner diameter region and the outer diameter region. An unload ramp is positioned at the outer diameter region. A controller outputs control signals upon sensing a power down condition. A feedback circuit is adapted to sense a back emf generated by the actuator and to use the back emf to apply a counter-acting voltage to the actuator that tends to bring the actuator to a stop. A switch is responsive to the control signals to (i) connect the feedback circuit to the actuator to enable the actuator to be brought to a stop while the disk continues to rotate and (ii) for then causing the actuator to move the head to the unload ramp. The method and apparatus control rotation of the spindle motor by providing a voltage waveform to each winding at selected switching times during each rotation such that switching does not occur while the head is positioned over data. In a first embodiment, switching during nondata regions is assured by setting the switch points to coincide in time with a fixed data storage surface format. The transition rate of the PWM waveform is modified by changing the "off-time", which is maintained as a constant in a control register, in response to a change in the condition or mode of operation of the DASD. Patent number: 5886489Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing spindle power and acoustic noise in a self-commutating brushless d.c. motor for a disk drive adjusts the commutation angle of the motor until a point of optimum power consumption is reached. In a preferred approach implemented during disk drive operation, a direction in which to change the commutation angle is determined such that spindle power consumption is decreased. The commutation angle is the changed in the determined direction until a point of minimum spindle power consumption is identified. In order to determine the correct direction of commutation angle change, the commutation angle is varied in a first direction for so long as the spindle power consumption is decreasing.
