  • Patent number: 7883108
Abstract: An inflator for an airbag is provided. The inflator can include a housing that has a first end and a second end. The inflator can also include a gas generant disposed in the housing that defines a bore. The inflator can include an igniter coupled to the first end of the housing that can ignite the gas generant upon receipt of a signal. The inflator can further include a temporary closure coupled to the second end of the housing that can be opened to provide an exit out of the housing. The ignition of the igniter can generate a shockwave that passes through the bore to open the temporary closure.

  • Publication number: 20080111358
Abstract: An inflator is disclosed herein. The inflator includes an initiator and a chamber that houses a quantity of stored gas. The initiator may be capable of actuating and causing the stored gas within the chamber to exit the chamber. A venting dome is also added to the initiator. The venting dome opens during deployment of the inflator. The venting dome also inverts and opens an aperture through which the stored gas may vent out of the inflator if the pressure of the stored gas exceeds a threshold level.

  • Publication number: 20060087106
Abstract: A one-piece initiator device including an end closure having a first end portion and a second end portion opposite the first end portion. The end closure forming a passage between the first end portion and the second end portion. A squib is at least partially positioned within the passage. A canister is mounted to the squib and extends outwardly from the end closure first end portion. The canister defines a charge chamber having a reactive charge disposed within the charge chamber. A permeable fill material is disposed within the passage and joins the squib to the end closure to form the one-piece initiator device. The permeable fill material insulates the squib from electrical contact with the end closure and provides a controlled gas flow path through the one-piece initiator device.
