  • Patent number: 7136552
Abstract: An optical interface between an optical fiber and a photodiode is provided. The optical fiber has an end. The optical interface includes a lens located such that a chief ray of an optical signal outputted at said end traverses a center of the lens. The lens may be a ball lens or a lens having an orientation such that the chief ray is incident substantially normal to a center of the lens.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 19, 2003
Date of Patent: November 14, 2006
    Assignee: Emcore Corporation
Inventors: Xin Simon Luo, Bryon Lynn Kasper, Nghia Kha, Xiaoming Lou
  • Patent number: 7011455
Abstract: An optical interface between an optical fiber and a laser is provided. The optical fiber has a core and an end. The optical interface includes a mirror that is capable of receiving an optical output of the laser and of reflecting the optical output to the end of the optical fiber such that a chief ray of the optical output is incident on the core of the optical fiber. The optical interface also includes a lens located such that the chief ray of the optical output traverses a center of the lens. Such optical interface may be used in a transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) having a vertical TO package for un-cooled lasers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 19, 2003
Date of Patent: March 14, 2006
    Assignee: Emcore Corporation
Inventors: Xin Simon Luo, Bryon Lynn Kasper, Eva Peral, Matthew Swass
  • Patent number: 6941080
Abstract: An optical transmitter includes a laser driver capable of receiving data and applying the data to drive a laser diode over a transmission line having first and second ends. The first end of the transmission line is coupled to an output of the laser driver. A first terminal of an amplifier is coupled to the second end of the transmission line. A second terminal of the amplifier is coupled to the laser diode. The signal amplitude applied at the first terminal controls optical output amplitude of the laser diode.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 15, 2002
Date of Patent: September 6, 2005
    Assignee: TriQuint Technology Holding Co.
Inventors: Bryon Lynn Kasper, Eva Peral, Johannes G. Ransijn

  • Patent number: 5740191
Abstract: A laser transmitter that includes a heating element coupled to the laser package and controlled to allow the laser to be kept at a higher temperature than ambient when low temperature extremes occur, thus limiting the range of wavelengths output by the laser over a given temperature range.
