Patent number: 6114642Abstract: Switchgear is provided that includes a housing enclosing electrical components having switch blades that establish visible open gaps in an open position. The switchgear includes an array of operating controls and viewing provisions to observe the open switch blades. The operating controls and viewing provisions are accessible from a first direction and are arranged at a first area of the housing while cable interconnection provisions are accessible from a second direction and are arranged at a second area of the housing. Thus, operating personnel can utilize the viewing provisions and the operating controls without being exposed to the area of the cable interconnections. In one specific arrangement, an array of operational displays is provided, with the displays overlying the viewing provisions and being movable to permit use of the viewing provisions. In a preferred arrangement, the switchgear includes multi-pole switchgear assemblies which are assembled from individual pole-unit assemblies.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: S&C Electric Co.Inventors: Thomas G. French, Raphael H. Guio, Henry W. Kowalyshen, Buddy B. McGlone, Gregory C. Mears, John C. Opfer

Patent number: 5904577Abstract: A separable, flexible connection arrangement (10) is provided for connection of two conductors (12, 14). In one arrangement, the separable, flexible connection arrangement (10) is utilized to provide an externally removable bushing (16) for connecting an electrical component located within a sealed enclosure (19). The flexible connection arrangement (10) includes two joints (20, 22) formed by two link members (50a, 50b) that are spring-biased and include protuberances (40, 42) that interfit into slots (30, 32) of the conductors (12, 14). A spacer (72) may be used to maintain spacing of the protuberances (40, 42) and also acts as a stop when contacted by the ends of the slots (30, 32). One of the slots (32) is formed with an open end (74) to enable easy insertion between the link members (50a, 50b). Alternatively, one of the conductors (100) includes a set of grooves (102, 104).Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1997Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: S&C Electric CompanyInventors: Roy T. Patent number: 5808251Abstract: An operation selector arrangement is provided for an operating mechanism that is controlled by movement of an operating shaft between the operational positions. Blocking features are provided for preventing operation between predetermined operational positions without first manipulating the blocking features. In a preferred arrangement, a an operating handle is utilized to operate the operation selector arrangement. A blocking member prevents operation of an operation selector between two operating positions without first stopping at an intermediate position, removing the operating handle, moving the blocking member, and then reinserting the handle. The blocking member is separately securable from the operation selector such that personnel may be authorized to operate the operation selector while other personnel are additionally authorized to manipulate the blocking member.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 1996Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Assignee: S&C Electric CompanyInventor: Buddy B. Patent number: 5521567Abstract: A switchgear module is provided that is assembled from one or more molded housing portions to provide a gas-tight volume for the housing of electrical components. The switchgear modules include provisions for assembly of various combinations of switchgear modules into a variety of electrical circuit configurations while maintaining a gas seal of the switchgear modules. In a preferred arrangement, the switchgear module includes bus conductors that are integrally incorporated during the molding of the switchgear module housing and that are accessible from opposite sides of the module. Further, the switchgear module includes integrally molded features for providing access to make electrical interconnections between the bus conductors of adjacently positioned switchgear modules.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1994Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Assignee: S&C Electric CompanyInventors: David H.
