  • Publication number: 20230403744
Abstract: A satellite constellation provides communication between user terminals (UTs) and ground stations that connect to other networks, such as the Internet. Satellites transmit beacon transmissions to particular areas on Earth as particular times. The beacon transmissions include information used by a UT to use a random access channel (RACH) uplink to request communication. Responsive to the request, encryption is established between the satellite and the UT. The satellite may then allocate uplink resources, send data to the UT on a downlink, and so forth. The UT receives additional data about future handovers to other satellites. Based on previously received data the UT may quickly re-establish communication with a satellite after an interruption, such as due to a power outage at the UT. If the previously received data has expired, the UT may again use a beacon transmission.

  • Patent number: 11523401
Abstract: Technologies directed to scheduling transmissions between a satellite system and customer terminals (CTs) with half-duplex (HD) radios are described. A communication system includes a radio, a modem with a HD controller, a downlink (DL) scheduler, and an uplink (UL) scheduler. The HD controller determines a first set of HD CTs that are eligible DL transmissions for a first radio frame and a second set of HD CTs that are eligible for UL transmissions for a second radio frame. The HD controller determines a throughput value and buffer information about each of the first set and the second set of HD CTs. The HD controller determines a first subset of HD CTs for DL scheduling and a second subset of HD CTs for UL scheduling. The DL scheduler schedules radio resources for a first radio frame and the UL scheduler schedules radio resources for a second radio frame.

  • Patent number: 11496208
Abstract: Techniques for improving the efficiency of transmitting data between devices are described. In an example, a first device transmits first data to a second device during a first time interval, whereby the second device is configured to communicate with the first device in a half-duplex mode. During a second time interval, the first device receives second data from the second device. The first device then determines that the second device transmitted the second data during a third time interval that is between the first time and the second time, and during which a reception of the first data by the second device is expected. The first device then retransmits the first data based at least in part on determining that the second device transmitted the second data during the third time interval.

  • Patent number: 11368202
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and computer program products are described for a user equipment in a wireless communication system with a plurality of user equipment where reference weight vectors orthogonal to each other are selected from a predefined set of directions for reference beams. The inner products of a UE-specific beam weight vector with all reference weight vectors is performed and UE-specific beams are mapped to the set of reference beams. From the set of reference beams, based on the reference beam with largest magnitude of inner product, the direction of the user equipment is determined. Based on that determined direction, the user equipment is instructed in to pair with another user equipment of the plurality.

  • Patent number: 11368213
Abstract: A satellite provides communication between user terminals (UTs) and ground stations that connect to other networks, such as the Internet. Because the satellite is within range of many UTs at any given time, many UTs are in contention to use an uplink to send upstream data to the satellite. Contention for the uplink may be managed by sending grants that allocate a portion of the uplink time and frequency resources to individual UTs. A UT serviced by the satellite uses information based on the grants to determine whether upstream data from a user device connected the UT should be accepted for future transmission promised to deliver specified quality of service to the user device. Acting as a distributed system, each UT may decide to approve upstream data based on one or more factors, such as source address, destination address, header flags, predicted radio availability, and so forth.

  • Patent number: 8817661
Abstract: In one embodiment, at least one grouping message is broadcast from a network element. The grouping message causes an access terminal (AT) in the communications network to regard the at least first and second subnets as both being members of a same subnet group. Location information and a maximum distance parameter associated with at least one area and configured to create a buffer zone along a border between the first and second subnets are broadcasted from the network element to the AT. The AT is prevented from sending a subnet identifier request message when the AT has, as an origin area, an area of the first subnet in the buffer zone and the AT travels to an area of the second subnet in the buffer zone. Session transfers are performed outside the buffer zone triggered by distance based location update messages, thus preventing session transfer ping-ponging.

  • Patent number: 8411862
Abstract: According to certain embodiments of the present invention, cryptosynchronization values are calculated on an initiating and/or responding device in a communications system such that cryptosynchronization-based procedures might succeed even when the discrepancy between the system times of the initiating and responding devices exceeds the cryptosync constraints imposed by the communications system. In one embodiment, the initiating device add/subtracts a cryptosynchronization adjustment value x to/from the initiating device's system time to yield an adjusted initiator cryptosynchronization value. In another embodiment, the receiving device adjusts the receiving device's system time to yield an adjusted receiver cryptosynchronization value.

  • Patent number: 6690661
Abstract: One embodiment of the present invention is a method for controlling the number of mobile-telephones transmitting acknowledgments to broadcast short messages (BSM) over a same set of random access channels at a same time. In this embodiment, the transmissions of BSM acknowledgments is controlled by the wireless communication system using random access channel restrictions and random access techniques. Specifically, the random access channel restrictions reduce collisions among acknowledging mobile-telephones and call processing mobile-telephones by allocating one or more specific random access channels over which a BSM acknowledgment can be transmitted, and the random access techniques reduce collisions among acknowledging mobile-telephones by distributing transmissions of the BSM acknowledgments over a period of time.

  • Patent number: 6351654
Abstract: Sharing the existing sector antennas at the base station each of which corresponds to one sector of the outer communication coverage area to create an omnidirectional inner communication coverage area. When transmitting or receiving data from a mobile in one sector of the outer communication coverage area only one antenna is used, and when transmitting or receiving data from a mobile in the inner communication coverage area all the antennas are used. This allows an increase in capacity of the hybrid inner/outer sectored cell without the additional cost of adding further antennas.
