  • Patent number: 5718498
Abstract: The invention provides a flashlight unit having a usual casing with a light bulb mounted in the casing in position to project light out through the forward end of the casing in a normal manner. In accordance with the invention, the unit also includes an illuminating member having a panel section mounted to be visible through the top side of the casing and also having a second integral section extending around the neck of the light bulb for directing side light into the panel section. In one embodiment, the panel section includes a diffraction grating for directing light perpendicular to the plane of the panel section to illuminate external objects. In the first embodiment, a planar mirror member is mounted on the top side of the casing adjacent to the panel section of the illuminating member and in co-planar relationship therewith in position to reflect objects illuminated by the illuminating member.

  • Patent number: 4884177
Abstract: A torch has a tray (1) for batteries and a mounting for a bulb (19). A cover (3,17) fits over this, confining the batteries and having a hole (20) into which the bulb projects. The material of the cover causes light to travel through it to a diffuser (21) which illuminates a zone out of the direct beam of the bulb. A mirror (16) fixed to the tray or to the cover adjacent the diffuser may be used with the diffused light as the sole source of illumination. The cover may have discontinuities elsewhere (18) which will show graphics or pictorial design illuminated by light diffused through the cover. The cover may be of J form, the hooked portion having the bulb hole (20) centrally and the diffuser (21) at its extremity, while the long limb (18) may carry the discontinuities. A switch for the torch is provided by a slider (8) captive to a side of the tray (1) and co-operative with the cover (3) to deform that side as it moves, to make and break an internal contact.

  • Patent number: 4739455
Abstract: A torch has a tray (1) to receive batteries (14) and a U-shaped cover (2) which snaps into engagement embracing the tray and confining the batteries. A bulb (3) is located by a resilient formation (21) of the tray and projects partially through an aperture (38) in the web of the cover, by which it is retained. A resilient side (9) of the tray is deformable inwardly to close a contact (17) to switch on. The cover is of translucent plastics material, such as acrylic, and an underlay sheet (41) of pictorial or graphic character will be illuminated by light from the bulb diffusing through the cover.

  • Patent number: 4451985
Abstract: Drawing apparatus has a screen (4, 24) forming one wall of a chamber containing liquid or powder material and a scriber (2, 11, 26). A guide "pen" (3, 13) magnetically attracts the scriber into contact with the screen and as it is moved over the surface the scriber tracks it, making a visible line in the material adhering to the underside of the screen. The surface may have means for producing signals as the pen and scriber traverse, each signal being identifiable with a particular point. If the succession of signals match a stored program, a sound associated with the figure drawn is generated.

  • Patent number: 4134592
Abstract: Apparatus for playing a game comprising a base or body formed with large numbers of small apertures or windows (13), and means for displaying selected visible markings in the various windows. In one example there are a number of rotatable elements (12,44,41) located in the case, one below each window, each body having a plurality of different characters or symbols, so that by turning the bodies selected markings are displayed at the different windows. The apparatus may include a cover to conceal some of the windows and special groups of rotary indicates (P+Q) to indicate scores achieved in the game. The indicators may be tubular (28) or spherical (44) or may have cassette type printed strips (40). Alternatively the apparatus may include a writing surface (49,50,51) in each window, and an eraser (52) to erase any writing.
