  • Publication number: 20040204655
Abstract: A breath alcohol measuring device (7) is provided with features for superior handling especially of the replaceable mouthpiece (1). A direct physical contact between the test subject being tested and the measuring device is practically ruled out by the combination. The mouthpiece (1) of the breath alcohol measuring device (7) has a trapezoidal cross section, which is complementary to a corresponding negative shape in a holder (6) of the breath alcohol measuring device (7) for the flush mounting of the mouthpiece (1).

  • Publication number: 20040154377
Abstract: A device for measuring breath alcohol has a mouthpiece (1) for picking up the exhaled respiratory gas volume flow of a person to be measured. The mouthpiece has a flow diaphragm (3). A pressure sensor (4) is connected via a first gas line to the mouthpiece (1) upstream of the flow diaphragm (3). A breath alcohol sensor (10) is connected via a inlet channel (6) to the mouthpiece (1) downstream of the flow diaphragm (3) and via a second gas line (11) to a sampling system (7, 8, 9) for a respiratory gas sample from the respiratory gas volume flow. An evaluation and control unit (5) receives the measured signals of the pressure sensor (4) and of the breath alcohol sensor (10) and actuates the sampling system (7, 8, 9). The sampling system (7, 8, 9) is designed such that two respiratory gas samples are fed, in a time sequence, into the breath alcohol sensor (10), whereby the volume of the first respiratory gas sample is at most 40% of the volume of the second one.

  • Publication number: 20040088096
Abstract: A process and system are provided for recognizing the movement of a motor vehicle as well as a process for using an acceleration sensor in a device for blocking the starting of a motor vehicle. Reliable information is obtained on whether or not the motor vehicle was moved. In the process for recognizing the movement of a motor vehicle, the accelerating forces acting on the motor vehicle are measured for this purpose as time-dependent functions and are subjected to a discrete Fourier analysis. If the majority of the frequencies determined is below a preset limit frequency, e.g., 0.3 Hz, movement of the motor vehicle is assumed, and an irrelevant vibration is otherwise assumed. An acceleration sensor is used in a device for blocking the starting of a motor vehicle and/or to demonstrate an inadmissible circumventing of the blocking.

  • Patent number: 6583417
Abstract: An improved gas-measuring device and a gas-measuring process is provided for determining the concentration of a gas by infrared absorption. The improvement is the compact design of the gas-measuring device and the higher reliability of the measurement results furnished by the gas-measuring device and the gas-measuring process. The gas-measuring device has an infrared radiation source (1), a pyramid-like beam splitter (7), and a quadrant detector, which has two measuring detectors (3, 4) and two reference detectors (5, 6). This guarantees a compact design of the gas-measuring device and, as a consequence, low fault liability of the measurement. The gas-measuring process includes an advantageous evaluation of the measuring signals (M1, M2) received by the two measuring detectors (3, 4) and of the measuring signals (R1, R2) received by the two reference detectors (5, 6).

  • Patent number: 5866794
Abstract: A device for calibrating a gas meter, in which gas to be analyzed is introduced into a measuring chamber by a delivery device via a delivery line. A storage tank is provided containing a calibrating substance, which tank is connected to the measuring chamber via a feed line. The storage tank is designed as a tank through which the gas to be analyzed can flow and has a gas inlet. A flow divider is provided in the course of the delivery line. A partial flow of the gas to be analyzed is sent by the flow divider to the gas inlet via a section of the feed line. The gas meter is an electrochemical measuring cell determining a measured concentration value of the calibrating substance in the gas to be analyzed in the measuring chamber. An infrared meter is provided, which evaluates the gas to be analyzed in the measuring chamber and generates a reference measured concentration value for the measured concentration value determined with the electrochemical measuring cell.

  • Patent number: 5770793
Abstract: The invention is directed to a measuring method for determining the concentration of a gas in a measurement sample with the aid of a combined measuring apparatus. The measuring apparatus includes a first infrared optical gas analyzer 1 as well as a second gas analyzer 2, which contains an electrochemical measuring cell 13. The measuring result of the electrochemical measuring cell 13 functions to correct the concentration, which is determined by the infrared optical gas analyzer 1, when the infrared optical reference measurement has already been performed on a measurement sample with this measuring sample not being free of the substance to be detected.

  • Patent number: 5739412
Abstract: The combination of the invention includes a mouthpiece 1 and a sample-taking system 8 for analyzing a gas sample. The mouthpiece 1 has a flow resistor 5 in the exhalation direction and a sample-taking connecting element 6 for the gas sample to be analyzed. The sample-taking system 8 has a pump and a through-flow measuring device 13. The pump pumps the sample gas flow from the sample-taking connecting element via a sample line 9 into a measuring chamber 15 of an analyzer 16. The combination is improved in such a manner that calibration is made possible with a calibrating gas flow greatly reduced compared to the flow of gas to be measured. This is achieved in that the sample-taking connecting element 6 is connected to the mouthpiece 1 forward of the flow resistor 5 viewed in the exhalation direction. The sample line 9 includes a flow throttle 11 in through-flow direction and an outlet opening 12 opening to the ambient.

  • Patent number: 5612896
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for determining characteristic variables of an electrochemically convertible substance in a gas sample. The component of the substance in the gas sample is determined by integrating the total area I enclosed between a physical measurement variable i(t) and a reference line 1. The method is improved in that the concentration portion of the substance can be determined with a high long-term stability and an identification of the substance is possible. The method is carried out by determining the characteristic variables from an individual or several component integrals (I.sub.1, I.sub.2, I.sub.3) as component areas of the total area I and/or of the sum of the component integrals and/or of the ratio of the component integrals I.sub.1 /I.sub.2 and/or of the ratio of the maximum value i.sub.max and the component integral I.sub.2.

  • Patent number: 5321972
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for quantitatively determining a gas component of a gas flow and an apparatus therefor. The apparatus includes a testing conduit having a throttle through which the gas flow flows. A sample conduit leading to the gas inlet of a gas sensor branches away from the testing conduit upstream of the throttle. The apparatus further includes a pressure sensor connected to the sample conduit, a valve connected to a gas outlet of the gas sensor and a control unit. The method of the invention is improved in that a defined quantity of gas can be supplied to the sensor without a pump being required. An improvement is achieved in that the control unit is so configured that: in a first step, the valve is opened; the gas volume is determined in a second step by computing the time integral of the signal of the pressure sensor; and, in a third step, the valve is closed after the throughflow of a pregiven gas volume or after a pregiven time duration has elapsed.

  • Patent number: 4976135
Abstract: A device for the transport of a gas sample into the measuring chamber of a detector for the determination of the portion of a component in a gas, and in particular of alcohol in respiratory air, includes a piston-cylinder unit serves as the transport element. The sample is used as completely as possible for the signal analysis of the sensor at the beginning of the sampling process. The measuring-sensitive surface of the sensor comprises a part of the wall of the cylinder chamber of the transport unit which serves as the measuring chamber.
