Publication number: 20070183623Abstract: A number of novel watermarking applications, and improvements to watermarking methods, are disclosed. Included are techniques for encoding printed circuit boards and street signs with watermarks, deterring credit card fraud and controlling software licensing using watermarks, registering collectibles via watermarks, encoding the margins of printed pages with watermarks, and using watermarks to convey extra information in video by which fidelity of the rendered video may be improved. One particular arrangement is a method in which a PDA, wristwatch, or other portable device with a display screen presents a pattern that includes a machine-readable identifier. This image is sensed by a separate device, such as a webcam or a camera-equipped cell phone. The sensing device can then take an action based on the identifier. In some arrangements, the action is personalized to the user.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 10, 2006Publication date: August 9, 2007Inventors: Tyler McKinley, Phillip Seder, Tony Rodriguez, Burt Perry, J. Publication number: 20070016790Abstract: The present invention provides methods and systems for authenticating identification documents. We also teach an identification document including two or more digital watermarks. The watermarks correspond with each other or with indicia carried by the identification document. The correspondence can be verified to determine authenticity. We also provide digital watermark detection methods and systems to identify the different watermarks through embedded orientation components. We then focus watermark message-decoding efforts on areas identified as likely including watermark orientation components. In another implementation we provide a watermark detection trigger to identify so-called legacy documents. The trigger may indicate the presence or expected absence of a digital watermark. In other implementations we provide a versatile document authenticator to toggle between watermarking and non-watermarking authentication processes depending on a detection trigger. Other implementations are provided as well.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 25, 2006Publication date: January 18, 2007Inventors: Trent Brundage, Mahmood Sher-Jan, Matthew Weaver, Brett Hannigan, Brett Bradley, John Stach, Burt Perry, Robert Durst, Geoffrey Rhoads

Publication number: 20050169496Abstract: A steganographic embedder embeds authentication data and value data into an object. This data is hidden yet machine readable from the object by, for example, scanning an image of the object and extracting a digital watermark from the object. A system for extracting this data includes an image capture device for capturing an image of the object and a steganographic decoder for extracting the steganographic data embedded in the image. The system uses the extracted data to authenticate the object and to associate an amount of value with the object. The value can be refreshed by using the steganographic data to reference a database where an updatable amount of value is stored.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 23, 2004Publication date: August 4, 2005Inventor: Burt Perry

Publication number: 20050008189Abstract: Security documents which has multiple fields or areas each of which contains information that is perceptible in more than one way: One field can contain a visually perceptible image and a digital watermark that can be detected when the image is scanned and processed, and another field can contain watermark data which can be correlated to the output of a fingerprint reader or of apparatus which scans a user's iris. The watermarks in the different graphic elements of the document are correlated to each other and correlated to the visual material on the document. Thus, the document can not be forged by replacing one element (such as a picture) with a similar element from another document. An automatic validation system of the present invention reads multiple fields on the document, and it also automatically detects information about the user. The various information is correlated to validate the document.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2001Publication date: January 13, 2005Inventors: Jonathan Carr, Burt Perry, Geoffrey Rhoads
