    Abstract: The compounds of the invention are 5'-phosphonates of 3'-azido-2',3'-dideoxynucleosides having the following general formula: ##STR1## where B is thymin-1-yl, cytosin-1-yl, adenin-9-yl, or guanin-9-yl. The compounds according to the present invention are selective inhibitors of replication of the human immunodeficiency virus in a culture of human lymphocytes.
