Abstract: Disclosed are a set-top box and display apparatus having a discrete-type card portion and card portion-mounting methods thereof, in which the card portion with a card such as a cable card for descrambling a scrambled signal is readily detached and attached from the outside. The set-top box includes: a signal receiver configured to receive a scrambled signal; a card portion configured to include a card slot portion to which a cable card for descrambling the received scrambled signal is mountable; a substrate configured to include the signal receiver and electrically connect with the card portion; and a housing configured to support and surround the substrate, the housing including a first opening formed on a surface parallel with the substrate, and the card slot portion of the card portion being disposed to face the substrate with the first opening of the housing therebetween.

Abstract: A master Audio/Video (AV) device and at least one slave AV device based on a Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) network remotely control a state of each other. Thus, the at least one slave AV device can share the contents stored in the master AV device. The at least one slave AV device controls an operating state of the master AV device in a remote place, allowing a subscriber to more easily enjoy the contents stored in the master AV device.

Abstract: In an Ethernet port control method and apparatus of a digital broadcasting system, a head-end is caused to physically block functions of an Ethernet port disposed in a set-top box in order to prevent an unauthenticated device from accessing a cable modem termination system (CMTS) from the head-end through the Ethernet port in the set-top box for a malicious purpose, such as hacking. The Ethernet port control apparatus includes a head-end for providing a control message, including port closing information, for preventing abuse of an Ethernet port, and a set-top box for resetting the Ethernet port according to the port closing information, thereby closing the Ethernet port when the control message is received from the head-end.

Abstract: An emergency calling system and method via a cable modem includes a cable modem connected to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) backup line in a cable modem-based Internet telephone service to transmit the emergency telephone number inputted by a subscriber telephone to the PSTN via the PSTN backup line. This enables an emergency calling function via a PSTN backup circuit and stable PSTN in a cable modem-based Internet telephone service. This also allows a cable modem-based Internet telephone service to promptly provide urgent emergency calling via the PSTN line in case of an emergency.
