  • Patent number: 5600332
Abstract: A wire antenna having a Vivaldi taper that is used to radiate or receive low frequency RF energy from or to an airborne platform. The antenna comprises two conducting wires that trail from the platform, and which comprise a radiator having a Vivaldi taper. The shape of the conducting wires is maintained by a combination of aerodynamic drag on the conducting wires, a weight connected to the end of the lower wire, a chute connected to the end of the upper wire, and nonconducting guy-wires connecting the upper and lower conducting wires. The nonconducting guy-wires are positioned at locations between the upper and lower conducting wires to form and maintain an optimal taper between the conducting wires. A method of deploying a Vivaldi antenna from an airborne platform is also disclosed. A lower conducting wire is attached to the enclosure, and an upper conducting wire is attached to a chute. The antenna and chute are stored in the enclosure, and the enclosure is disposed beneath the platform.

  • Patent number: 4566656
Abstract: A projectile trajectory correction system, the projectile itself including a unique steering arrangement. The projectile, initially part of a shell cartridge, is fired, and its position is automatically sensed. A corrected trajectory necessary to hit a target is calculated and data commands are transmitted to the projectile. The data command signals are sensed by an antenna on the projectile. The antenna in turn generates a signal which is fed to the projectile steering mechanism which is deflected in response thereto to steer the projectile onto the correct trajectory. The steering mechanism includes an elongated rod extending from the rear of the projectile into the surrounding air stream. Deflection of the rod provides the actual steering.

  • Patent number: 4411398
Abstract: A simple, retractable, self-erecting wing for a low speed missile having a fabric wing cover affixed to a leading edge structure that is the only erected structural member in the wing operative position. The wing cover forms a pocket that contains air. The leading edge structure is hinged and folds, along with the wing cover, into a compact slotted space adjacent the outer wall of a missile body. In the folded position the leading edge structure forms a cover for the slot and the cover coincides with the outer shape of the missile body. A large fabric wing can be completely stored within the missile body for minimum drag during any high speed portion of the missile flight, the wing being released to the operative position by a simple mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4399962
Abstract: An articulated nose is locked in axial alignment with the longitudinal axis of a rolling projectile body. Pyrotechnic means within the nose is actuated to unlock the nose and tilt it toward the target when the error between the projectile path and the path to the target exceeds a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 4029270
Abstract: A stabilizer system for use with an aerodynamic body having pivotal control surfaces to control the roll rate of the body. A pair of high mass members are diametrically supported for radial displacements induced by the centrifugal forces on the body. A pair of drive racks project from the high mass members and engage a pinion rotatably mounted on a centrally disposed axle. Another pinion is supported at the axially off-set distal end of the axle. It imparts rotational motion to a pair of connecting members by means of gear sectors mounted on shafts which are adapted to cause pivotal displacements of the control surfaces to increase or decrease the deflection thereof. This produces a corresponding increase or decrease of the roll rate of the aerodynamic body.
