  • Patent number: 4605155
Abstract: A method of repairing a tubular assembly in which access to a defect in the tube is limited includes the steps of cutting an opening in the tube on the side opposite the defect so as to expose the defect from the inside of the tube. A tubular insert is inserted into the tube to cover the defect and is secured in place by means of brazing or welding. The remaining space between the opening and insert is closed by means of close-out patches which are welded or brazed to both the insert and the tube. The result is a permanent repair having great structural integrity.

  • Patent number: 4505332
Abstract: There is disclosed a dual well string, hydraulically operated, retrievable packer in which one mandrel connectible with one well string is releasably connected to the body means of the packer to permit it to be lowered therewith, and the other mandrel connectible to the other well string is vertically reciprocable with respect to the body means and thus with respect to the first-mentioned mandrel. The packing element and slip assembly of the packer are supported on and carried about a first body section, and a second body section includes an expander plate which is movable relative to the first body section to expand the packing element and the slip assembly into engagement with the well bore by means of a hydraulically actuated mechanism including pistons reciprocable within cylinders formed in the first body section and connected to the expander plate by means of a pair of rods.

  • Patent number: 4418244
Abstract: A bistable switch for controlling a latching relay for connecting and disconnecting an air conditioning load, operable over a telephone line by the application of a short burst of one of a pair of determined frequencies. The switch includes a power supply capacitor (35) charged directly from the telephone line (32, 33). A pair of narrow band filters (39, 40) each respond to one of the pair of frequencies. The output of each filter drives an FET amplifier (60) which in turn drives a charge pump (68, 69). When a sufficient amount of charge is received, the charge pump will provide a firing pulse to one of a pair of SCRs (77). The SCRs are each connected in one leg of a bridge circuit which includes one of a pair of diodes (79). The remaining legs of the bridge are formed by a pair of transistors (80) with the coil (46) of a bistable relay (47) attached across the bridge.

  • Patent number: 4396066
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method are provided for effecting a sealed connection to an upstanding end of a tubular member in a subterranean well where the upstanding end of the tubular member is of irregular configuration at one end. A connecting housing is lowered by a tubing string over the upstanding end of the tubular member and is provided internally with an annular elastomeric seal element and two pairs of cooperating slip elements respectively disposed above and below the annular seal. The actuation of the slip elements to engage the housing with the tubular member is such that a predetermined amount of compression force can be applied to the annular seal to insure that the seal will resist the normal fluid pressures encountered in the well operation, but forces in excess of such predetermined limit are not applied to the seal by the manipulative movements of the reconnected tubing string.

  • Patent number: 4345613
Abstract: An apparatus for removing concentrations of liquid from a natural gas pipeline comprising a tap valve mounted on the pipeline at the upper portion thereof so as to be in communication with the interior of the pipeline. A siphon apparatus is removably mounted on the tap valve and includes a siphon pipe which is vertically movably mounted with respect to the tap valve. The siphon pipe is vertically movable from an upper position wherein the lower end of the siphon pipe is positioned above the tap valve to a lower position wherein the siphon pipe extends through the tap valve so that the lower end of the siphon pipe is positioned at the bottom interior of the pipeline. A discharge pipe extends from the siphon pipe and is in communication with a liquid holding tank. A siphon valve is imposed in the discharge pipe to permit the selective removal of the liquid from the pipeline. A portion of the siphon pipe is enclosed by an operating cylinder barrel.

  • Patent number: 4189134
Abstract: A method for folding a newspaper tightly into compacted W-shaped cross-sectional configuration and for retaining the newspaper in that form by mechanical means wrapped around its exterior. A conventionally half-folded newspaper, for example, as produced by a standard printing press, is continuously moved along a path that is perpendicular to the center of the half-fold, folded back upon itself along a quarter-fold line coincident with the path and folded forwardly along eighth-fold lines that are parallel to and on opposite sides of the quarter-fold line and that are equidistant from the quarter-fold line and the lateral edges of the newspaper. The folded newspaper in this "W" configuration is compacted laterally, bringing its folded portions tightly against each other and a retaining element is wrapped around its exterior. The retaining element preferably is a sealed jacket of moisture-proof sheet material which is progressively formed around the compacted newspaper as it continues along the path.

  • Patent number: 4044583
Abstract: A wire winding blade extends through spiral outfeed guide members and receives spring-like unannealed wire from a source drawn by rotation of the winding blade; the wire from the source first passes through tensioning means then over an infeed guide pulley which guides it into a linear guide member having a bore slightly in excess of the wire diameter from which the wire passes over a small diameter idler roller sheave which imparts a back bend to the wire which is then fed into the slot of the spiral wire guide means where it is bent in a reverse manner about the winding blade.

  • Patent number: 4028498
Abstract: A private automatic branch telephone exchange system which includes an integral system for maintaining and updating selected data information. Interconnections between subscriber lines and trunk lines are accomplished with a unique non-blocking switching matrix which allows switching interconnections to be independently made and terminated without blocking subsequent interconnections on the same circuits. Various information signal functions, such as dial tone and ring-back, are selected by multiplex circuitry which is external of the switching matrix, so that all switching matrix trunks are available for voice and ring signal connections. The switching matrix is operated by a circuitry including a programmed digital computer, and provides substantial flexibility of control and service functions. Subscriber line status is monitored at all times, so that available special services can be accomplished by a subscriber in response to dialing selected digits.
