    Abstract: An ionization smoke detector having two ionization chambers, one completely open to the ambient atmosphere and the other, a reference chamber, in communication with the atmosphere only through a breather tube having a defined length to diameter ratio. The detector employs a piezoelectric horn mounted on a cylindrical tube-like structure and attached to a printed circuit board containing one or more holes opposite the horn element so as to form a resonant chamber. The invention further contemplates a test switch which can be used to determine whether the battery is charged and the circuits are functioning.

    Abstract: An extendible hopper is mounted to the undercarriage of a pusher machine and is operable to be extended to engage the face of the coke oven battery, between the buckstays and just below the door jamb, to catch hot coke that spills out of coke ovens as the door is removed and the pusher ram is retracted. A bin is also mounted to the undercarriage of the pusher machine to receive the hot coke collected by the extendible hopper. Quench sprays are mounted to the bin to quench the hot coke, and suction means are mounted to the bin to draw off pollutants that emanate from the hot coke and the quench thereof.

    Abstract: A wall-avoiding recliner chair wherein the seat and backrest move as a unit forwardly to a TV reclined position during which time the footrest is projected to extended position, and subsequently the seat and backrest may be moved relative to each other into advanced reclining positions with the footrest remaining extended. The chair is driven into TV position by the occupant moving the armrest forwardly while exerting pressure on the backrest. Subsequently, the chair is placed into advanced reclining positions by exerting pressure on the backrest. A carrier link is employed to suspend the seat therefrom while the carrier link is pivotally mounted to a fixed base by mounting links. The latter are actuated forwardly relative to the base by connection to the armrests. A sequencing linkage is utilized to prevent the backrest from pivoting relative to the seat until the TV position is reached.

    Abstract: A handle-operated recliner chair has a seat mounting linkage consisting of two mounting links mounting the seat directly to a stationary base for movement between normal and reclining positions. A footrest is mounted to the front of the seat by a footrest linkage which is extended and retracted through means of a handle mounted relative to the seat to rotate a torque tube which is connected to the footrest linkage to operate the same. One of the links of the footrest linkage is directly connected to the front mounting link of the seat such that extension of the footrest will cause the seat mounting links to pivot forwardly to not only place the seat in an inclined position but also, to move the seat forwardly relative to the base to provide wall-avoiding action which comes in to play when the backrest is reclined to avoid striking a nearby wall with the backrest.

    Abstract: A handle-operated, wall-avoiding, recliner chair having a headrest which during normal or upright position of the chair is concealed behind the backrest but which is extended upon movement of the chair to TV position or to reclining positions to support the head and upper regions of the back of the chair occupant. The chair is moved into TV position, that is, with the footrest extended, by means of a handle mounted on the side of the chair. The headrest is mounted to the backrest by a linkage which is actuated to extend or retract the headrest by means of a headrest actuating linkage connected to the handle to be driven thereby when the chair is moved to the TV position. The headrest mounting linkage is also actuated when the chair is moved to advanced reclining positions, beyond TV position, to further position the headrest in harmony with the advanced reclining position of the chair.

    Abstract: A two-way wall-avoiding recliner chair including a seat and a backrest rigidly interconnected to move together as a unit relative to a fixed base to which the seat is mounted by a linkage for movement between a normal position in which the backrest is generally upright and a first reclining position in which the seat has been advanced forwardly relative to the base. A footrest is in retracted position at the front of the seat when the latter is in the normal position and is in extended position forwardly of the seat when the seat is placed into the first reclining position known as TV position. From the TV position, the seat and backrest unit may be moved into further reclined positions, including a fully reclined position with the footrest remaining extended but slightly adjusted downwardly for reclining comfort.

    Abstract: The invention concerns a method of controlling a multi-bin sheet collator. Adjacent collator bins are treated as one virtual bin and sheet feeding is controlled appropriately by skipping bins if the number of sets to be collated equals or is smaller than half the number of bins. Thus, multi-page documents having a number of pages exceeding the capacity of a single bin can be collated. In a combined copier/collator the number of copies selected by the operator determines the number of sets, and thus the size and grouping of the virtual bins.

    Abstract: A welding device capable of providing a blanket of nonreactive gas to isolate atmospheric gases from a weld zone to prevent weld contamination and capable of providing a stream of suppression gas across the path of a welding beam to suppress the formation of a beam absorbing plasma is disclosed. The device comprises a housing having a welding beam entrance port, a structure wall cooperating with the housing to form a first cavity therein and having an exit port aligned with the entrance port, means for supplying suppression gas to the first cavity, means for exhausting the suppression gas from the first cavity, a base cooperating with the housing and the structure wall to form a second cavity within the housing, means for providing a nonreactive gas to the second cavity, and means for passing the nonreactive gas from the second cavity to the weld zone.

    Abstract: If any portion of a rigid surface is to be extended above the plane of the rest of the surface, then the extendible portion must be pierced. If it is necessary to keep elements from entering the resulting cuts and openings necessary to accomplish such an extension, then a weatherproof seal must be provided especially for those cuts pierced in a direction perpendicular to weathering forces and parallel to natural drawings. Since roofs are of varying shapes, there is a need for universal plates to be inserted in above mentioned cuts. These plates will provide a weatherproof seal in either extended or conventional configuration.

    Abstract: The disclosure describes improved apparatus for adjusting a unidirectional microphone in order to reduce the electrical output due to mechanical shocks applied to the microphone casing. The microphone includes a diaphragm supported by a housing which is resiliently mounted on the casing. The adjustment apparatus includes a mounting diaphragm positioned between the outer casing and the housing, and an enclosed chamber provided with an air leak which can alter the compliance and resistance of the mounting diaphragm in a controlled manner. A method of balancing the size or value of the elements of the microphone to provide pneumatic shock cancellation is also described.

    Abstract: A copier/collator installation wherein the copier's output copy sheets are collated into sets in a multi-bin collator. The collator bins are vertically stacked.Vertical stacking of the electrostatically charged and heated copy sheets, which therefore tend to curl, is enhanced by providing collator bins having electrically nonconductive walls. The bottom sheet-receiving walls are formed to have a generally concave cross section, facing upward. Considering the direction of sheet movement, this concave surface extends generally transverse the sheet movement. Pivoted and biased paper stabilizing wires hold down the leading portion of the sheet stack in the bin, and also absorbs the sheet's kinetic energy as the sheet enters the bin. A flexible, electrically nonconductive plastic flap, at the bin's entrance or mouth, holds down the sheet's trailing portion, and also absorbs the sheet's kinetic energy.

    Abstract: An improved fastener system is derived for cold working the surfaces defining aligned fastener holes in structural members and installing fasteners therein. Essentially, an integral fastener and mandrel construction facilitates the insertion of a sleeve into the holes, an expansion of the sleeve thus disposed to thereby cold work the surfaces of the members defining the holes, and the pulling of the fastener into the holes thus prepared and sleeve-lined. A frangible neck is provided between the fastener element and the mandrel element which permits the breaking off and discarding of the latter after the former is installed. Retenion means is then installed, formed or otherwise provided on the fastener end in conventional manner. Thus, cold working and fastener installation is accomplished in only two steps due to the critical design and configuration of the combined fastener, break-off groove and mandrel.
