  • Patent number: 4598619
Abstract: In licorice manufacturing equipment, a cylindrical multibladed cutter assembly for cutting licorice strips into bite length has its blades radially positioned in a cylindrical roller and its cutting edges transverse to the direction of movement of a conveyor carrying extruded licorice strips. For the purpose of preventing the severed bites of licorice from becoming wedged between the adjacent cutting blades, ejector rods are provided, one between each pair of cutting blades. Camming means cam the ejector rods radially outwardly at the circumferential position at which cutting takes place, thereby to dislodge and eject the licorice bites from the cutter.

  • Patent number: 4541269
Abstract: A gas chromatographic detector for detection of compounds which fluoresce as a photo-response to light. The detector utilizes a remotely located light source for fluorescent excitation of a compound in a gas phase, and includes apparatus for the measurement of emitted fluorescence of a gas and for the measurement of transmitted light through a gas. The detector is close-coupled to an output end of a heated chromatographic column and eliminates the requirement of heated transfer tubes between the column and the detector.

  • Patent number: 4494267
Abstract: Fluid is inertially removed from the bristles of brush by causing the bristles of a moving brush to be intercepted in the path of their motion in a manner so as to abruptly affect the speed of movement of the bristles and so inertially disperse fluid therefrom. The fluid so dispersed is collected within an opened top container comprising an upright walled enclosure. This upright walled enclosure may be utilized in the manner disclosed for stowing and transporting additional items useful to an artist.

  • Patent number: 4486526
Abstract: A photopolymerizable coating over a diazo resin provides a high-speed lithographic plate or photoresist while improving the printing life of the plate while making its development simpler than that of most other photopolymer plates. The photopolymer is a cinnamoylated resin which is placed over a diazo based material.

  • Patent number: 4484178
Abstract: The digital-to-analog converter described herein generates an analog signal level from a digital value and a modulation coefficient. The converter modulates the digital word applied to the conversion stages and smoothes the resultant duty cycle modulated analog levels to produce additional analog levels between the normal levels provided by the conversion stages of the DAC. In one embodiment the duty cycle modulation of the digital value is accomplished by a rate multiplier controlling the incrementing of the digital word applied to the conversion stages. In another embodiment of the invention, the duty cycle modulation of the digital word is performed by a microcomputer. A low pass filter or a DC motor is used to smooth or filter the duty cycle modulated levels from the conversion stages.

  • Patent number: 4481617
Abstract: An optical disc drive system in which the empty sleeve component of an optical disc cartridge is utilized to lock the optical disc in its operational position while occupying a storage location within the drive system. The locking/storage feature is achieved by providing adjacent to the conventional disc insertion opening in the drive frame an additional opening for receipt of the empty sleeve component and by providing guides within the drive for positioning the empty sleeve over the optical disc. The empty sleeve cooperates with a spring loaded frame/disc lowering mechanism which lowers the optical disc to the drive spindle where it is held by a magnetic force generated by a magnetized portion of the spindle. The sleeve also cooperates with a frame/sleeve latching mechanism to facilitate withdrawal of a frame supported optical disc from the sleeve and reinsertion of the frame supported optical disc back into the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4467647
Abstract: A direct reading tank gauge is made of plastic tape or thin metal in an endless loop. Measuring indicia are applied to one surface of the tape in a display tape assembly. An armature is fixedly mounted to the tape. A tank float is magnetically coupled to the armature, which follows the float and fluid level. A hinged window enables visual observation of tape indicia representing the position of the float, armature and liquid level and removal of the entire display tape assembly for service or repair.

  • Patent number: 4463670
Abstract: A crusher for articles such as aluminum cans, having a crushing chamber with a bearing plate disposed in the base thereof. An ejection lever is disposed within the bottom of the crushing chamber and is utilized to actuate a crusher piston and eject the crushed article at the end of a cycle. In the embodiment disclosed, the placing of an article within the crushing chamber retracts the ejection lever against a spring or other mechanical bias element. This movement of the ejection lever then actuates a switch to operate the crusher piston. The downward operation of the crusher piston causes a latch to restrain the ejection lever in its retracted position. As the crusher piston reaches the maximum amount of travel, a limit switch reverses the drive mechanism and the crusher piston moves upward.

  • Patent number: 4446519
Abstract: Security for computer software is achieved by providing each purchaser of a software package with an electronic security device which must be operatively connected to the purchaser's computer. The software sends coded interrogation signals to the electronic security device which processes the interrogation signals and transmits coded response signals to the software. The program will not be executed unless the software recognizes the response signals according to preselected security criteria.
