  • Publication number: 20070200029
Abstract: A cycloidal propulsion unit for controlling a thrust vector includes a hub that rotates about a hub axis. Further, the unit includes an airfoil blade pivotally mounted on the hub along a blade axis parallel to the hub axis. As a result, the blade may pivot about the blade axis while traveling along a blade path during rotation of the hub. The unit further includes a ring that rotates around a ring axis parallel to the hub axis. The ring is interconnected with the blade via a control rod. Also, a device is engaged with the ring to selectively position the ring axis relative to the hub axis. As a result of these structures, selective positioning of the ring axis provides control of the rotation of the blade about the blade axis as the blade travels along the blade path.

  • Publication number: 20070095974
Abstract: A system and method for docking an airship to a mooring mast includes a thruster that is mounted to the fore end of the airship. When activated, the thruster generates a thrust vector that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the airship and is selectively directional. In particular, the configuration of the thruster can be changed to vary the direction of the thrust vector around the longitudinal axis to maneuver a connector on the thruster into contact with the mooring mast. Engagement of the connector to the mooring mast then docks the airship to the mooring mast.

  • Publication number: 20070095983
Abstract: An unmanned, lighter-than-air airship includes three omnidirectional thrust generating units. One unit is mounted at the fore-end of the airship to generate thrust in a plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the airship. This unit controls pitch and yaw movements of the airship. The other two units are mounted on the airship equidistant from the first unit, and are located in a same midships plane that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. These two units generate thrust vectors that control roll movements of the airship and provide propulsion for the airship.

  • Publication number: 20070001054
Abstract: An airship ballast system includes an engine driven propeller and a cooling tube that is positioned coplanar with the propeller and outside its tip path. One end of the cooling tube is connected to receive exhaust gases from the engine while the other end is connected to a ballast tank. In operation, exhaust gases from the engine are cooled as they transit the cooling tube, and water condensed from the cooled exhaust gases is pumped to the ballast tank to maintain a ballast for the airship.
