  • Patent number: 4718702
Abstract: The coupling comprises a sleeve which receives a pair of tubular elements thereabout. One of the elements is pinned to the sleeve, and the other has a restricted, axially-movable relationship with the sleeve. Terminal ends of the tubular elements are spaced apart, in a mutually confronting relationship, and have mounted thereto circular and resilient webs or discs. The peripheries of the discs are fastened together, and the discs resiliently flex to accommodate for expansion and contraction of the tubular elements.

  • Patent number: 4717075
Abstract: A depicted embodiment of the apparatus comprises a housing having a chamber therewithin and a pair of ports opening into the chamber. One port admits an energized gas, and the other admits a particulate powder, into the chamber. Tubes conduct the powder through the chamber, isolated from the energized gas, to exit ends of the tubes which have convergent/divergent ejector nozzles circumjacent thereto. The ejector nozzles discharge the gas therethrough in fine streams, to draw powder from the tube exit ends for conveyance with the gas streams, and direct the streams of gas and powder to adjacent and collinear diffusers for dispersion of the gas-borne powder from the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4531568
Abstract: An apparatus for the continuous casting of metallic strand from a melt has a fluid-cooled coolerbody surrounding a casting die, and resilient O-ring seals which surround the upper and lower ends of the coolerbody to contain the cooling fluid within a distribution conduit. Extensions of the cooling fluid distribution conduit are formed within the coolerbody between the O-rings and the heat-dissipating strand, as protective thermal barriers to limit the temperature rise experienced by the O-rings. An annular shield also is disposed intermediate the upper O-ring and the strand to form two air gaps which enhance the thermal barrier effect.

  • Patent number: 4301857
Abstract: An oscillating cooled mold assembly for the continuous, high-speed casting of metallic strands or rods, especially upcasting strands or rods of copper alloys such as brass, has a hollow die in fluid communication with a melt typically held in a casting furnace. A cooler body surrounds the die in a tight-fitting relationship to form a solidification front in the melt as it advances through the casting zone of the die. The strand or rod formed from the solidified melt is pulled through the die while the mold oscillates in a direction substantially parallel to the direction of travel of the rod.

  • Patent number: 4172375
Abstract: Apparatus for guiding and coiling one or more metallic strands that are continuously advancing along their length from a casting apparatus. A coiling apparatus has an open-top coil-collecting basket with concentric, generally cylindrical inner and outer walls. A rotating cone is disposed over the inner wall. At least one boom and a set of opposed rolls and associated fairing assemblies mounted on the boom guide the strand from the casting apparatus to the coiling apparatus. An exit end of the boom directs each strand vertically downward onto the cone of one coiler. Friction between the strand and the cone lays the strand in the basket in horizontal wraps without a reversal of the laying direction or kinks. The boom exit end mounts a straightener that includes a pair of hydraulically-actuated slide bars that are orthogonal to each other and to the strand. The slide bars produce a cyclic deflection of the strand about the center of the cone to form a uniform, non-tangled coil.
