Publication number: 20180294851Abstract: The present invention disclosure relates to methods to construct an efficient and low-cost massive MU-MIMO system for wireless communications. It enables beamforming in the angular domain. It consists of several components. The first component is a method to construct two orthogonal one-dimensional component reference ULAs of an UPA. Hence the channel vector of the RF signals, in the angular space, from each UE over the entire UPA of the BS can be constructed from channel estimation for each component ULA, which reduces the number of receive signal chains from M×N to M+N and thus reduces the cost of the BS equipment. The second component is a method to schedule UEs for transmission in the downlink from available UEs that have a channel vector. The scheduled UEs result in a channel matrix with a simple solution, constructed in the angular space, for inversion of a large correlation matrix so as to enable efficient beamforming to these UEs and to ensure that inter-user interference is eliminated.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 29, 2017Publication date: October 11, 2018Inventor: Carl Cao

Patent number: 9642059Abstract: A method and system for coordinated interference suppression in a communication system. The communication system implements at least a first radio access technology via a first base station and a second radio access technology via a second base station. The first and second radio access technologies differ from one another. Information relating to an interference signal received at the first base station via the first radio access technology is received at the second base station from a first device associated with the first base station. At a second device associated with the second base station, an interfering user equipment accessing the second base station via the second radio access technology is identified. The identification is based on the information received from the first device associated with the first base station. Interference caused by the identified interfering user equipment is suppressed by the second base station.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2015Date of Patent: May 2, 2017Assignee: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET LM ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Xiao-Dong Li, Patrick Lie Chin Cheong, Carl Cao

Patent number: 9282509Abstract: A method and mechanism to reduce the energy consumption of a single-carrier wireless transmission system such as a base station or a subnet of multiple base stations in relation to the loading of the system. Energy savings may be achieved by withholding the transmission of the system over some time slots, decreasing the available frequencies for user traffic transmission, dynamically adjusting the system to a lower bandwidth, or a combination of these techniques in proportion to the system transmission load at a given time. The lower the system load, the more transmission resources may be withheld or reduced, and, hence, the more savings in energy consumption. Energy savings may be most prominent during periods of low traffic loading of the single carrier-based wireless transmission system.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2012Date of Patent: March 8, 2016Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Carl Cao, Mikhail Royz, Xiao-Dong Li

Publication number: 20130059618Abstract: A base station in a network includes an Active Electronic Scanned Array (AESA) to enhance and increase transmission and reception in a wireless telecommunications network. The AESA comprises a plurality of transmitter and receiver modules for sending and receiving signals from a User Equipment (UE) with increased signal strength and higher gain. The AESA comprises a central controller; and subcontrollers that cause signals to be directed to specific transmission modules (TxMs) and receiver modules (RxMs) in the AESA to send to the UE. By increasing the number of TxMs used, the signal strength to the UE can be increased significantly. Subcontrollers for handling different radio frequencies can be utilized in the same AESA so that multiple telecommunication systems can be accommodated on a single base station.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2012Publication date: March 7, 2013Inventors: Carl Cao, Sidney Lee Weatherford

Publication number: 20080207227Abstract: A method of paging a mobile terminal in a radio access network wherein the last known location of a mobile terminal is stored. A location message (also called a Route Update message) is sent from a terminal and received at a sector in the network, identifying the location of the terminal. The network determines a paging zone for that terminal based on configuration information for that sector. The configuration information for each sector typically includes a Route Update radius, and then one or both of a paging zone radius offset, and statically configured sectors. When the terminal needs to be paged, the network then broadcasts a page to the terminal in each sector in the paging zone. Such a system adjusts the paging zone to include sectors which the terminal has a reasonable likelihood of moving to before the network learns that the terminal has moved out of the previously established paging zone.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 27, 2006Publication date: August 28, 2008Applicant: NORTEL NETWORKS LIMITEDInventors: Hong Ren, Carl Cao, Alfred Schmidt
