    Abstract: A foamed glass article for preparing surfaces, the use therefor, and a method of making same are provided. The foamed glass article is in the form of a block, disk or similar product, and is used for preparing surfaces such as by sanding, rubbing and scraping the same to clean, abrade, polish, smooth, or the like such a surface. The foamed glass article is formed from a starting mixture that comprised glass, 0.10-20% by weight of at least one non-carbon/sulfate based foaming agent, and optionally an additional abrasive material. A mixture of powdered glass and non-carbon/sulfate based foaming agent can be placed in a mold and heated so that the mixture sinters and subsequently foams. Thereafter, the foamed mixture is annealed.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a heat insulating module and a method of making the same for use in lining a high temperature chamber. The module has a main body formed of layers of refractory fibers positioned side by side and impaled on at least one rigid tie member spaced inwardly of one lateral edge of all layers with the ends of the tie member secured to one leg of L-shaped mounting members with the other legs thereof extending outwardly beynd the end layers of the module and coplanar with the adjacent lateral edge of said layers. The layers may be interconnected by folding a unitary blanket of fibers and, in either assembly mode, the layers are held snugly compressed by at least one encircling tie band.

The module has a main body formed by a blanket of refractory fibers folded into pleats held compressed against one another by a pair of spaced apart tubular members traversing the opposite end portions of all except the two end layers and spaced inwardly near the cold face of the module. The ends of the tubular members are secured to the upright legs of respective L-shaped mounting members with the other legs thereof lying in a common plane generally parallel to the cold face of the module and anchorable to respective fastener studs securable to the wall of the chamber being insulated.

    Abstract: A heat insulating module for use in lining high temperature chambers and furnaces comprising a thick mat of refractory fibers accreted by vacuum from an aqueous solution on to a mounting subassembly attachable to a chamber wall. The fibers are deposited about and interlocked with one or more anchor members fixed to the mounting subassembly. Larger mounting subassemblies include a reinforcing framework and a reticulated member to which the anchor members are fixed. An alternate mounting subassembly comprises a pair of anchor-equipped strips criss-crossing at right angles and secured together at their mid-lengths. The ends of the strips project beyond the module edges to facilitate securing the module to a chamber wall and include portions which internest with the strip ends of adjacent modules.
