  • Patent number: 8117704
Abstract: The invention relates to a swimming pool cleaner with wheels driven by a turbine. The pool cleaner is intermittently turned from its path of travel along an underwater surface. A turning cam is provided inwardly of and adjacent to each of a pair of the side wheels. The cams are rotatably mounted on the turbine driven wheel axle which extends between said wheels. Each cam intermittently extends a gripping formation beyond the operatively supporting surface of the adjacent wheel. The cams will preferably comprise a disc with an integral annular internal ring gear formed. An inner gear is fixed for rotation with the axle and an outer gear is supported between the inner gear and the ring gear to rotate the cam. The inner gear is an interrupted gear member to cause intermittent stepwise rotation of the ring gear and the outer gear is a sprocket supported for unidirectional rotation.

  • Publication number: 20090300862
Abstract: The invention relates to a swimming pool cleaner which is intermittently-turned from its path of travel along an underwater surface. A pair of side wheels (3) connected to be driven by a turbine (8) to move the cleaner in a direction of travel. A cam (12) is provided inwardly of and adjacent to each of the wheels. The cams are rotatably mounted on the wheel axles (5). Each cam intermittently extends a gripping formation (13) beyond the operatively supporting surface of the wheel. The cams and gripping formations are arranged so that, when they engage the pool surface, they impart movement to the cleaner which is in the opposite direction to the direction of travel. The cams are preferably arcuate, with at least one radial gripping formation. The rotation of the cams is opposite to that of the wheels and they are driven in a cycle retarded relative to that of the wheels. The gripping formations are removably securable for adjustment on the cams.

  • Publication number: 20080141471
Abstract: The invention concerns a suction-type submerged surface cleaner (10) which comprises an injection moulded cleaner head (12) defining internal valve chamber (14). There is a suction inlet (24) to the valve chamber, and an outlet (45) from the valve chamber. A hammer (16) is arranged to oscillate in the valve chamber under the influence of suction flow through the valve chamber from the inlet to the outlet. Contact surfaces (54) of the valve chamber walls (46, 48), which are contacted by the hammer as it oscillates, are provided internally by regions of the valve chamber walls which are reduced locally in thickness compared to other regions of the valve chamber walls. Also, at least some relatively thick regions of the valve chamber walls are formed during moulding with internal cavities to provide buoyancy for the cleaner.

  • Patent number: 6463614
Abstract: The pool cleaner includes a body and at least one member secured to the body and which, in use, engages a submerged surface to be cleaned, thereby preventing the body from directly contacting the submerged surface. The member and at least part of the body are rotatable relative to each other. A skirt may be attached to the member, or the member may take the form of a skirt.

  • Patent number: 6292969
Abstract: A pool cleaner which includes an integrally moulded body with an elongate float which is embedded in the body and which has a length which is at least 25% of the length of the body. A biasing weight is also embedded in the body on an opposing side of the passage. A flow interrupting device controls water flow through a passage in the body. The float may be separately formed or it may be formed by foaming material from which the body is made.

  • Patent number: 5970557
Abstract: A pool cleaning device which has an integrally moulded body in which are formed a valve chamber, an outlet chamber and two passages which extend between the valve chamber and the outlet chamber. A valve member is captive inside the valve chamber. Buoyancy and biasing components are located inside the moulded body.
