Abstract: The illustrative embodiments described herein are directed to a method and apparatus for managing frequencies used by devices. In one embodiment, the process detects a set of frequencies from a set of devices to form a set of assigned frequencies. The process may also detect a first frequency used by a first device. The process may determine whether the first frequency interferes with the set of assigned frequencies. The process may also identify an unassigned frequency for use by the first device in response to determining whether the first frequency interferes with the set of assigned frequencies.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer usable program product for facilitating a selection of a telecommunication network are provided. A request for a type of network associated with a called identifier is received from a calling communication device. A repository of information about caller identifiers is searched. Information corresponding to the called identifier is selected. The selected information includes the type of network associated with the called identifier. The selected information is returned to the calling communication device. The information in the repository is updated by adding information about new caller identifiers, updating information about the several caller identifiers existing in the repository, or both.

Abstract: A wireless communications device and method for establishing a voltage threshold at which to turn off electronics of a wireless communications device includes determining a power threshold level at which a device is to be shut off when a battery of the device reaches or drops below the power threshold level. The determined power threshold level may be offset. The amount of power remaining for the battery in the communications device may be measured. The communication device may be shut off based on the offset power threshold level so as to preserve enough power for an emergency message to be generated and sent in the case of an emergency.

Abstract: A wireless communications device including a housing, a user interface configured to enable a user to type text messages for communication over a communications network, an emergency message button selectable by a user, and a processing unit in communication with the user interface and emergency message button. The processing unit may be configured to generate and send an emergency message to a public safety answering point in response to a user selecting the emergency message button.

Abstract: The disclosed embodiments include a method for monitoring and optimizing network performance to a wireless device that includes determining network performance information of a wireless router and communicating data packets containing the network performance information to a network management device. The network management device is configured to transmit instructional data packets to the wireless router that include instructions for optimizing network performance to said wireless device in response to identify a network performance problem associated with the wireless router.

Abstract: A system and method for powering-up a wireless communications device may include (i) powering-up the wireless communications device using a standard power-up sequence in response to a request for a standard power-up sequence by a user, and (ii) powering-up the wireless communications device using an abbreviated power-up sequence in response to a request for an emergency message to be communicated by the user.

Abstract: A wireless communications device and method for communicating an emergency message to a public safety answering point (PSAP) may include storing (i) data representative of a plurality of emergency messages being of different message types and (ii) a network address associated with each emergency message. In response to a user selecting one of the emergency messages, the selected emergency message and associated network address may be established as defaults for communication of the default emergency message to a PSAP over the communications network. In response to the user requesting to send an emergency message, the default emergency message may be generated by using the default network address to communicate the emergency message and communicated over the communications network to the default network address for routing the default emergency message to a PSAP local to the user.

Abstract: The disclosed embodiments include a method of initiating a call. The method includes receiving, at a network device over a first network, an identifier associated with a called party. The method determines a first security level associated with the first network and identifies a plurality of networks associated with the called party using the identifier. The method queries a database to determine a second security level for each network in the plurality of networks and automatically selects an identified network from the plurality of networks associated with the called party having the second security level at least equal to the first security level. The method completes a call to the called party using the identified network.

A cell code identifier in which the wireless communications device is located may be determined, and the data message, emergency data message short code, and cell code identifier may be communicated via a communications network for the data message to be routed to a PSAP handling emergencies in an area in which the wireless communications device is located.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer usable program product for selecting a network for telecommunication are provided. A type of network supporting a called identifier is identified. Several types of networks are accessible to a calling communication device. The network corresponding to the identified network is selected at the calling communication device. The call is completed using the selected network. A database is queried with a query including the called identifier. The response to the query is used for identifying the identified network from the response. The query may be sent to a local database, a remote database, or both. The local database may include information about frequently called identifiers as well as called identifiers that are provided by a user. The identified network may be overridden by selecting a network of a type that is different from the type of network supporting the called identifier.

Abstract: A system and method for providing information associated with public safety answering points may include storing a set of records including information associated with a plurality of PSAPs, each record may include (i) an identifier indicative of a PSAP available to service emergency communications, (ii) at least one cell code identifier indicative of cell sites in which the associated PSAP services, and (iii) at least one network address capable of receiving certain emergency data message types. Abstract: In one embodiment, a method for monitoring and optimizing network performance to a wireless device that includes determining network performance information of a wireless router and communicating data packets containing the network performance information between said wireless router and a packet network switch. The data packets are communicated from said packet network switch to a network management device. The network management device is configured to instruct the said packet network switch to adjust at least one of encoding/decoding rate and power amount to optimize said network performance to said wireless device.
