    Abstract: The present invention relates to methods, devices and systems for associating consumable data with an assay consumable used in a biological assay. Provided are assay systems and associated consumables, wherein the assay system adjusts one or more steps of an assay protocol based on consumable data specific for that consumable. Various types of consumable data are described, as well as methods of using such data in the conduct of an assay by an assay system. The present invention also relates to consumables (e.g., kits and reagent containers), software, data deployable bundles, computer-readable media, loading carts, instruments, systems, and methods, for performing automated biological assays.

    Abstract: A horizontal remote mining system comprising a water jet cutting head, down hole crusher, jet pump, and guidance system for orchestrating select excavation of a horizontal borehole. The system is assembled on the end of a drill string comprised of multiple compartments accommodating various water pressures and functions in association with the remote excavation process. Selective tubing is also utilized to facilitate movement of air and ventilation of the borehole. In this manner, relatively thin coal seams can be economically mined.

    Abstract: A haulage system and related process are provided for intermediate continuous conveying of coal or other mined minerals from the discharge of a continuous mining device to a distant point (typically outside the mine) where the mineral is stockpiled or transferred to another conveyor. The continuous haulage device of this invention is able to advance behind the continuous miner without interruptions for repositioning, and to follow the continuous miner without intervention, as it proceeds into the mine entry and beyond. The subject haulage system is not mechanically coupled to the miner and does not rely on the miner for its locomotive power. The receiving end of the haulage system maintains its position beneath the miner discharge by means of a mechanical proximity sensor, which enables the system to mimic the irregular pattern of advancement typical of continuous mining systems.

    Abstract: A device for controlling the injection of a cement into a cavity is provided which is particularly useful in the practice of total hip arthroplasty. A canister holds a standard cement syringe and supports a retracting assembly which withdraws a nozzle of the syringe into the canister. The device ensures that the tip of the nozzle remains at or very near the meniscus of the rising cement column so that the cement flows primarily radially into the cavity by withdrawing the nozzle into the canister as the cement is injected. Additionally, a pressure release mechanism permits the syringe to migrate as a unit independently of the retracting assembly to maintain the tip of the nozzle at the meniscus of the rising cement column.

    Abstract: A method of locating near-surface underground chambers, rooms, caves, pits, tubes, faults in surface rocks, and the like, using acoustic techniques is disclosed. For mapping large areas, a survey grid for transmitter transducer placement first is laid out over the area of interest.A transmitting transducer is coupled to the bedrock at one of the grid sites, and acoustic waves are generated in the earth by operation thereof. Portable acoustic receiving means, including a receiving transducer, are used to detect acoustic waves from the transmitter at a plurality of receiving sites surrounding the transmitting station. Transmitted acoustic waves from the transmitting site received by the receiving transducer are converted to electrical signals by the receiving transducer and recorded for subsequent use. Following operation of the receiving means at each receiving site surrounding the transmitter transducer, the received signals are compared to determine any differences in their magnitudes.
