  • Patent number: 8252013
Abstract: An expandable surgical access device can include an elongate member comprising an expansion lumen between a proximal end and a distal end, and an expandable body operably attached to the distal end of the elongate member. The expandable body can be inserted to an internal location in a body in a collapsed configuration. When in a desired position, the expandable body can be expanded outward to an expanded configuration. In the expanded configuration, the expandable body can be adapted to protect adjacent anatomical structures and can have an internal diameter defining an operating lumen sufficient to allow passage of a cannula through the operating lumen. The expandable body may be further expanded inward to a constricting configuration whereby the expandable body can be adapted to constrict about and anchor the cannula in the operating lumen.

  • Publication number: 20110270396
Abstract: In one form, an expandable implant configured for positioning between one or more adjacent bones or bony portions, such as vertebrae of the spinal column for example, is provided. In one aspect, the implant includes a plurality of deformable members that is each positionable between an unexpanded configuration and an expanded configuration in response to axial compression of the deformable members. In the unexpanded configuration, each of the deformable members engages with one or more immediately adjacent deformable members, while in the expanded configuration each of the deformable members further engages with one or more additional deformable members positioned on the other side of the one or more immediately adjacent deformable members. In another form, a method for positioning an expandable implant in a minimally invasive approach is provided. However, in other embodiments, different forms and applications are envisioned.

  • Publication number: 20100010449
Abstract: A cannula stabilization device, systems and kits comprising the cannula stabilization device, and methods of using the cannula stabilization device can include a collar removably securable about a longitudinal axis of a cannula. The collar can include a locking mechanism adapted to secure the collar about the cannula. When the collar is positioned on the skin, the collar can stabilize the cannula from at least axial movement in a distal direction. Embodiments of the devices, systems, kits, and methods are useful for stabilizing a cannula during minimally invasive surgery or other percutaneous procedures.

  • Publication number: 20090275970
Abstract: A surgical access needle device, systems and kits comprising the surgical access needle device, and methods of using the surgical access needle device can comprise a first elongate member having a blunt distal end, a second elongate member having a sharp distal end, and an actuator mechanism. The actuator mechanism can be operably attached to the first elongate member or second elongate member to adjust the positional relationship between the first elongate member or second elongate, thus exposing a distal end of the first elongate member or the second elongate member. Variations of the devices, systems, kits, and methods are useful for providing and creating a surgical access passage for performing minimally invasive surgery or accessing internal organs or tissues.
