    Abstract: The present invention provides a method for the synthesis of unagglomerated, highly dispersed, stable core/shell nanocomposite particles comprised of preparing a reverse micelle microemulsion that contains nanocomposite particles, treating the microemulsion with a silane coupling agent, breaking the microemulsion to form a suspension of the nanocomposite particles by adding an acid/alcohol solution to the microemulsion that maintains the suspension of nanocomposite particles at a pH of between about 6 and 7, and simultaneously washing and dispersing the suspension of nanocomposite particles, preferably with a size exclusion HPLC system modified to ensure unagglomeration of the nanocomposite particles. The primary particle size of the nanocomposite particles can range in diameter from between about 1 to 100 nm, preferably from between about 10 to 50 nm, more preferably about 10 to 20 nm, and most preferably about 20 nm.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a substrate for attachment of biomolecules. The substrate is coated with a multiamino organosilane. If desired, the substrate can be further modified prior to coating with a multiamino organosilane. Optional surface modifications include coating the substrate with SiO2 or leaching with acid to form a SiO2 rich layer. DNA, nucleic acids, or any bimolecules can be attached to the coated substrates of the invention. Although a variety of substrates are contemplated, the preferred substrate is a low self-fluorescent glass.

    Abstract: Chromatographically active stationary phases and adsorbents are made from sol-gels produced by the hydrolysis and condensation of alkoxysilanes that contain hydrolyzable alkoxy groups and non-hydrolyzable organo groups. The organo groups provide chromatographic activity in the resulting hybrid organic-inorganic material. Deposited as hybrid sol-gel coatings on solid supports, the coatings are heated to activate them. Hybrid organic-inorganic materials which contain different organic groups distributed in an inorganic network may be designed for the improved analysis of specific groups of compounds by the selection of the organo groups. Hydrocarbon mixtures may be advantageously analyzed by such hybrid materials.
