  • Patent number: 6929535
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention abrade the information bearing surface of a compact disc (CD), DVD or other digital information bearing disk, in order to render it unreadable by standard consumer grade disk readers. This is accomplished via embodiments of the invention that are extremely lightweight, highly portable and inexpensive. Embodiments may or may not employ an outer case in order to retain the remnants of the abraded information layer of the disk. In order to operate one embodiment of the invention, the apparatus is opened and a compact disc is inserted with the face of the disk against the abrasive mechanism. After closing the apparatus, the outer housing of the apparatus is rotated with sufficient pressure against the abrasive mechanism in order to cause the substrate to be damaged sufficiently to render it unreadable by consumer based disk readers. The apparatus can be opened over a trash bin in order to empty both the disk and the particulate matter generated by the abrasive process.

  • Publication number: 20050098512
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention comprises an apparatus for holding computer disks with or without a case in a manner that displays the label side of the disk to the user. In one or more instances, the apparatus embodying the invention comprises an open-faced housing having a plurality of grooves of multiple depths recessed into one or more portions of the housing. Each groove is configured to hold disks and/or their cases so that the user may easily insert and retrieve disks via the grooves. Embodiments of the invention allow the storage of a jewel case or a disk, a mini-jewel case or a disk, a jewel case or a mini-jewel case or a mini-jewel case and a disk at the same time or a jewel case in place of both a mini-jewel case and a disk. The grooves holding a disk may or may not overlap the data carrying portion of the disk depending upon the embodiment of the invention.

  • Publication number: 20040190430
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention store compact disks, allow for easy access to unformatted disks without use of two hands and without removing the top portion of the bundle package. In addition, embodiments of the invention also allow for external storage of disks and writing implements outside of the bundle package. This is accomplished via embodiments of the invention optionally comprise an extractor, external disk grooves and indentations for writing implements. After extracting a disk from the bundle package either with a finger or with an extractor, the disk may then be annotated and/or burned and placed in the grooves on the top or bottom of the bundle package. Embodiments of the invention that are configured with disk and/or implement holding grooves on the top of the burn bundle may be operated without turning the burn bundle upside down.
