  • Publication number: 20230180372
Abstract: Apparatus and method for filming a scene using a plurality of strobable lighting setups in rapid sequence to concurrently record a plurality of motion picture clips of the scene, one motion picture clip for each strobable lighting setup. The apparatus includes a plurality of strobable light sources that are coordinated to form the plurality of lighting setups, a controller to actuate the strobable lighting setups at a constant rate in a sequence that repeats multiple times during each macro frame, and a camera to capture a burst sequence of images within each macro frame. The burst sequence of images shows the scene illuminated by each one of the plurality of lighting setups in sequence during each macro frame. Since the constant rate is above the flicker threshold, people on set viewing the scene illuminated by the repeating sequence of strobable lighting setups perceive apparently continuous (non-flickering) illumination of the scene.

  • Publication number: 20230179870
Abstract: Apparatus for recording a scene using a plurality of lighting setups in rapid sequence to concurrently record a plurality of motion picture clips of the scene, one motion picture clip for each lighting setup, the plurality of clips together exhibiting negligible motion offset. The apparatus includes multiple light sources, a controller to define the plurality of lighting setups using the multiple light sources and to actuate the lighting setups in sequence, a variable frame rate camera to capture a sequence of micro frames showing the scene illuminated by each one of the plurality of lighting setups in sequence during each micro frame, and optionally a processing module to process the sequence of micro frames to generate a motion picture clip of the scene for each of the lighting setups. The duration of the micro frame sequence is short enough to minimize the need for an algorithm for removing motion artifacts.

  • Patent number: 11283980
Abstract: An apparatus and method for recording a scene using two lighting setups in alternation so as to concurrently record motion picture footage of the scene for each lighting setup, the footage for the two lighting setups having minimized motion offset. The apparatus includes: a plurality of light sources, a controller to define two lighting setups using the plurality of light sources, and to actuate the lighting setups in alternation, a camera to capture a sequence of frames showing the scene illuminated by one of the two lighting setups in alternation, and optionally a processing module to process the sequence of frames to generate two clips of footage of the scene, each corresponding to a lighting setup. The timing of actuation of the lighting setups relative to the frame boundaries avoids the need to use optical flow algorithms to remove motion artifacts, and the need for a specialized high speed camera.

  • Patent number: 9261755
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed by which the movement of virtual continuous light sources illuminating various objects or persons in a scene, can be simulated over arbitrary paths throughout the captured scene. The simulated movement of each virtual continuous light source through a captured scene can be created using a stationary array of discrete light sources, and for which no physical movement of the array or the discrete light sources is required. The actuation of each of the discrete light sources can be performed sequentially according to a pre-specified sequence by a controller. Control signals for actuating the discrete light sources are synchronized with frames captured by a camera, such that the camera never sees the transitions from illuminating one discrete light source of the array to illuminating another.
