A method for forming a cutting element that includes sintering a mixture comprising diamond particles and a sp2-containing carbon additive at a first processing condition having a pressure of greater than about 100,000 psi to form a polycrystalline diamond layer is also disclosed, as well as cutting elements having diamond grains non-uniformly distributed therethrough.
