  • Publication number: 20240017115
Abstract: An adjustable reformer for exercising is provided. The reformer includes a frame, a carriage slidably mounted to the horizontal frame, and at least one resistance element connected to the carriage. A cord connects the carriage to at least one lower guide and at least one upper guide. Pulling the cord causes movement of the carriage along the frame against resistance provided by the resistance element. The guides can be height adjustable. The reformer can include a cord-length adjustment system. Related methods of exercise are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20230364601
Abstract: The invention is a high-throughput voltage screening crystallographic device and methodology that uses multiple micro wells and electric circuits capable of assaying different crystallization condition for the same or different proteins of interest at the same of different voltages under a humidity and temperature controlled environment. The protein is solubilized in a lipid matrix similar to the lipid composition of the protein in the native environment to ensure stability of the protein during crystallization. The invention provides a system and method where the protein is transferred to a lipid matrix that holds a resting membrane potential, which reduces the degree of conformational freedom of the protein. The invention overcomes the majority of the difficulties associated with vapor diffusion techniques and essentially reconstitutes the protein in its native lipid environment under “cuasi” physiological conditions.

  • Publication number: 20170260692
Abstract: A method comprises subjecting raw wood comprising cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose to a heat treatment at a crystallization temperature in the range of from about 150° C. to about 250° C. for a period of time sufficient to induce crystallization of cellulose in the raw wood, wherein the crystallinity of the processed raw wood as measured after delignification using 380 Raman is at least 5% greater than the crystallinity of the raw wood as measured after delignification and prior to processing using 380 Raman. The method can further comprise extracting CNCs from the processed raw wood via an acid hydrolysis procedure.

  • Publication number: 20140005281
Abstract: Inhibitors of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (statins) are prescribed to lower serum cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of CVD. Despite the success of statins, many patients abandon treatment owing to neuromuscular adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Genome-wide association studies have identified the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4149056 in the SLCO1B1 gene as being associated with an increased risk for statin-induced ADRs. By studying slow-channel syndrome transgenic mouse models, this invention determined that statins trigger ADRs in mice expressing the mutant allele of the rs137852808 SNP in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) ?-subunit gene CHRNA1. Mice expressing this allele show a remarkable contamination of end-plates with caveolin-1 and develop early signs of neuromuscular degeneration upon statin treatment. The invention demonstrates that genes coding for nAChR subunits may contain variants associated with statin-induced ADRs.

  • Patent number: 4868517
Abstract: An improved variable gain circuit is described having an input for an audio signal and an output for an audio signal. An operational amplifier having inverting and non-inverting inputs and an output has its input connected to the audio input. The first differential cell having inverting and non-inverting inputs, output, and a first control current terminal, has one input connected to the output of the operational amplifier and the other input connected to a reference potential. The output of the first differential cell is connected to one of the inputs of the operational amplifier in negative feedback relation and a source of controlling current is connected to the control current terminal. The second differential cell is also provided having inverting and non-inverting inputs, an output, and a second control current terminal. One input of the second differential cell is connected to the output of the operational amplifier and the other of the inputs is connected to the source of reference potential.
