Patent number: 8911076Abstract: Various embodiments of an eyeglass and eyeglass system are provided that can maintain the geometric and optical quality of a lens supported by the eyeglass. The eyeglass can comprise a frame, a support member carried by the frame, and a lens mounting area or groove extending at least partially along at least one of the frame and the support member. The support member can be pivoted, moved, or deflected relative to the frame between a retaining position and an open position. In the open position, the lens can be seated within the lens mounting area. In the retaining position, the support member and the frame retain the lens without exerting deformative forces on the lens. Accordingly, the as-molded geometric and optical qualities of the lens can be preserved.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 2013Date of Patent: December 16, 2014Assignee: Oakley, Inc.Inventors: Ryan Calilung, David Ginther, Hans Karsten Moritz, Carlos D. Patent number: 8881316Abstract: Eyewear, such as a goggle, is provided that can include an anterior module (such as a lens support) and an interchangeable posterior module (such as a faceplate). The anterior module can be adapted to support at least one lens in a wearer's field of view. The posterior module can be adapted to fit against a contour of the wearer's face and can be selectively interchangeable with the anterior module to modify at least one physical characteristic of the eyewear. In some embodiments, the anterior and posterior modules can be coupled by a suspension assembly in order to allow articulation of the posterior module relative to the anterior module for evenly distributing forces against the wearer's face. Further, the anterior module can be rigid for maintaining the lens in an optically-desirable orientation. Furthermore, the goggle can comprise an interchangeable lens mechanism to facilitate interchanging of lenses in the goggle.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2011Date of Patent: November 11, 2014Assignee: Oakley, Inc.Inventors: Carlos D. Reyes, Ryan Saylor, James Nelson Castro, Errol Tazbaz, David Ginther

Publication number: 20140253868Abstract: A detachable adjustable electronics module may be removably or permanently connected to eyewear. The module may include electronics for processing audio and/or video input and/or output signals. The module may be provided with an adjustable arm, for adjustably carrying a speaker. The module and/or the speaker may be adjusted relative to the wearer in any of the anterior-posterior direction, the inferior-superior direction and laterally. Rotation adjustments may also be accomplished. Eyewear may be provided with only a single module, on a single side, or with two modules, one on each side, such as to provide stereo audio or dual mono sound.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2014Publication date: September 11, 2014Applicant: Oakley, Inc.Inventors: James H. Publication number: 20130250231Abstract: An enhanced performance earstem for eyeglasses is provided that can incorporate one or more flex zones or points along the length of the earstem. In some embodiments, the earstem can comprise an elongate body having an anterior end and a posterior end and at least a first segment and a second segment on the body having a first flex zone or point disposed at least partially therebetween. A center of the first flex zone or point can be within a given range from the anterior end. Further, some embodiments can provide differential flexibility along the length of the earstem. For example, the body of the earstem can have plurality of relatively flexible zones, and each flexible zone can be separated from an adjacent flexible zone by a relatively rigid zone. In this regard, the relatively flexible zones can have different stiffnesses.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2013Publication date: September 26, 2013Applicant: Oakley, Inc.Inventors: Peter K. Patent number: 6820353Abstract: Application-specific midsoles and method of designing midsoles are described herein. The midsole includes a plurality of cells that extend generally upward from a generally flat support structure and provide the ability to selectively attenuate the ground reaction forces that result when one engages in activities associated with the application for which the shoe midsole is designed. The midsole comprises a plurality of zones. The shock attenuation properties of each zone is determined by the geometry of the cells in the zone and material composition of the midsole.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2002Date of Patent: November 23, 2004Assignee: Oakley, Inc.Inventors: James D. Patent number: 6250756Abstract: Disclosed is an interchangeable nosepiece system for an eyeglass frame. The nosepieces system can be used to adjust the orientation of a lens on a wearer's face such that the optical centerline of each lens extends in a predetermined relationship with respect to the wearer's actual straight ahead line of sight. The nosepieces are removably mounted onto eyewear and may be customized for the facial geometry of a particular wearer.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 2000Date of Patent: June 26, 2001Assignee: Oakley, Inc.Inventors: James H. Publication number: 20010001570Abstract: Disclosed is an optically corrected lens for nonprescription eyeglasses. In a preferred embodiment, the anterior surface of the lens lies on a portion of a first sphere having a first center. The posterior surface of the lens lies on the surface of a second sphere having a second center. The first and second centers are offset from one another to provide a tapered lens. The lens is oriented on the head of the wearer by a frame that maintains the lens in a position such that a line drawn through the first and second centers is maintained substantially in parallel to the normal sight line of the wearer. Lenses are thus provided which have improved optics when mounted in an as-worn orientation such that they exhibit both vertical “rake” and horizontal “wrap.” Methods of making the lenses, and eyewear incorporating the lenses, are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 27, 1999Publication date: May 24, 2001Inventors: MALCOLM NEAL HOUSTON, JAMES H. JANNARD, CARLOS D. REYES
