  • Patent number: 7033361
Abstract: A method and a device for positioning a cutting guide for cutting a bone such as the tibia has a first elongated member having a longitudinally extended threaded surface. A second member is provided for receiving the first member. The second member includes an adjustment element mounted for rotation on the second member and for movement transverse to a longitudinal axis of the first member. The adjustment element has a threaded surface selectively engageable with the first member threaded surface. A biasing element extends between the second member and the adjustment element for biasing the adjustment element into engagement with the threaded outer surface of the first member so that rotation of the adjustment element causes relative movement between the first and second members. The adjustment element is moveable against the biasing element in the transverse direction out of engagement with the first member. Thus, the device allows both free sliding and threaded adjustment along the axis.

  • Patent number: 6896702
Abstract: A selected augment, shown as a tibial augment, is secured at an augmentation location on a prosthetic implant component, shown as a tibial implant component, by a securing element assembled with the body of the augment for displacement relative to the augment body to selectively engage an abutment located on a depending structure of the implant component, adjacent the augmentation location, so as to establish a securing force between the securing element and the depending structure for urging the augment against the implant component, and thereby secure the augment to the implant component at the augmentation location. In the tibial augment, a distal surface includes surface portions extending in anterior-posterior directions and oriented essentially normal to medial-lateral directions.

  • Patent number: 6629978
Abstract: IM revision tools include a cutting guide having a coupling (preferably a male dovetail coupling), and a plurality of valgus adapters each having a mating (for example, female dovetail) coupling. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, ten valgus adapters are provided: left and right with offsets of 0 mm, 2 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm. All but the 0 mm valgus adapters are provided with dual rotational joints which allow a cutting guide to be positioned in both the anterior-posterior direction as well as in the medial-lateral direction. All but the 0 mm valgus adapters are provided with a reverse clock face below the female dovetail coupling. The methods include selecting the appropriate valgus adapter, attaching the valgus adapter to an IM stem and to the cutting guide, and inserting the IM stem into the femoral canal. If 0 mm offset adapter is not chosen, the cutting guide can be orbited 360° to position the cutting guide correctly.

  • Patent number: 5954727
Abstract: A positioning tool has an elongated cylindrical section for reversibly engaging an acetabular cup which is insertable through a posterior opening in the cup. The outer diameter of a proximal portion of the cylindrical section is expandable to engage the inner wall of the cup in an interference fit to prevent movement of the cup relative to the tool and hold the cup in engagement with the tool to move the cup with movement of tool to place the cup for implanting at a desired position. The expanded portion of the tool may be contracted to release it from the cup after implantation. The proximal portion, which is attached to the distal portion and separated therefrom by a partial transverse slot, is divided into semicircular sections by a diametrical vertical slot therebetween. Diametrically opposite quadrants of the proximal portion further contain elongated slots therethrough which are perpendicular to the vertical slot and spaced from the edge of the cylinder by a thin section.

  • Patent number: 5782925
Abstract: A knee implant rotational alignment apparatus comprising a non-implantable femoral trial component having substantially the same configuration as a femoral implant, a cooperating tibial articulating trial component having two parallel guide rails protruding from the upper surface thereof, which rails engage with grooves in the lower surface of the femoral trial component, which engagement prevents rotation of the femoral trial component relative to the tibial articulating trial component in a transverse plane but allows flexion and extension rotation of both components, a tibial trial baseplate having an outer periphery substantially identical to the outer periphery of a tibial implant baseplate of corresponding size, which baseplate accommodates a spring clip activator the rotation of which facilitates selection of the rotational alignment of the prosthesis.

  • Patent number: 5326368
Abstract: A modular prosthetic acetabular cup for use in restorative hip replacement is disclosed. The acetabular cup is of modular construction whereby extension members can be attached to an acetabular cup to provide a acetabular cup device with a cross section of a desired configuration. The extension members can be attached to the acetabular cup by means including dovetail joints, mechanical fasteners, and locking taper joints similar to those in femoral hip components.
