  • Publication number: 20030160193
Abstract: A measuring device for the rolling and lathing parameters of railway wheels (1) permitting the viewing of both sides of the flange and the rolling band by means of artificial viewing methods, using two laser light sources (2), each one of which projects a line of light along the profile to be measured. A camera (4) simultaneously captures both sides of the illuminated profile (3) with the aid of a two mirror periscope system (5). The periscope design permits simultaneous viewing of both the flange and the rolling band with a single camera. A set of wheel presence sensors (10) activates image capture by the camera. Each captured image is sent to an electronic artificial viewing equipment (6), where the two profile views containing the recorded image are composed resulting in a complete profile. The obtained results are displayed in the electronic equipment itself or in a computer (7).

  • Publication number: 20030103216
Abstract: Device and process for measuring ovalization, buckling, planes and rolling parameters of railway wheels by use of a rolling rail (2) along which the outermost part of the wheel (1) to be measured is made to pass at approximately 10 km/h. Various sensors (7) detect the presence of the wheel in the measuring area, such that they activate the device. A collimated laser beam system (6) projects a solid light beam on the wheel, constantly interfering therewith producing images which are reflected on a screen (4). These images are recorded by a camera (5) and sent to an artificial viewing system (9) where the necessary parameters are calculated, on the basis of which the required measurements are obtained. The results obtained are sent to a computer (10) where the measurement reports are generated.

  • Patent number: 6233050
Abstract: Apparatus and process for measuring the unroundness and diameter of railway wheels in which a rolling rail is provided on which rolls a railway wheel to be measured, and a guard-rail centers the wheel during the measurement process. Several light sources project light beams at the periphery of the wheel at different transverse locations, such that the light beams continuously intersect the flange and rolling band of the wheel. The images produced by the light beams pass through filters to video cameras which store the images, and sends them to a computer which can process the images and determine unroundness and wheel diameter. The measurement process is initiated by a trigger system which detects the presence of a wheel on the rail and activates the measuring equipment when the wheel is at the beginning of a measuring zone and deactivates the equipment when the wheel is at the end of the measuring zone. The invention is applicable to the repair and maintenance of railway wheels.

  • Patent number: 5808906
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring parameters of the wheels on a moving railway car in which the wheels travel on a steel slab and when a wheel passes a position sensor and is in a suitable position for measurement, a signal is produced which is supplied to a laser generator. The laser generator produces a planar laser beam which is directed onto the wheel. An image generated by the planar beam of light is captured by a camera in synchronization with the signal produced by the position sensor. The image is supplied to high-resolution artificial-vision electronic equipment whose output is supplied to a central control computer which processes the output and produces the desired information and displays it on a monitor. Separate laser generators can be used to produce separate beams for measuring wheel diameter and wheel profile and the separate generators are connected to separate electronic equipment in turn connected to the central control computer.
