  • Publication number: 20140238662
Abstract: An apparatus for reducing vibration in a downhole component includes: an electrically conductive auxiliary mass attached to the component and configured to vibrate in a direction corresponding to a direction of downhole component vibration and absorb a portion of the downhole component vibration; and a magnetic component configured to generate a magnetic field through the auxiliary mass having a direction at least partially perpendicular to the direction of auxiliary mass vibration, the magnetic field configured to induce a current in the auxiliary mass in response to auxiliary mass vibration. The apparatus has an auxiliary mass vibration frequency tuned relative to a selected natural vibration frequency of the downhole component to reduce vibration of the downhole component, the auxiliary mass vibration frequency based on a magnetic stiffness of the auxiliary mass, the magnetic stiffness based on a strength of the magnetic field and/or a resistance of the auxiliary mass.

  • Publication number: 20130154431
Abstract: Systems and methods for the construction of electric motors, where expandable material is inserted into the slots in which magnet wires are positioned and expanded in the slots to mechanically restrain the wires. One embodiment comprises a downhole electric motor such as might be used in an electric submersible pump (ESP) system. The motor has a stator with multiple slots in which magnet wires are positioned. A slot liner is positioned in each slot and an expansion pad is positioned in each slot between the slot liner and the slot wall nearest the bore of the stator. The wires are positioned inside the slot liner. When the motor is almost completely assembled, it is filled with oil. Some of the oil is absorbed by the expansion pads, which then expand to fill the unoccupied volume in the slots, thereby restraining the movement of the wires within the slots.

  • Publication number: 20130058797
Abstract: Vibration of a rotor positioned within a stator of an electric motor of an electric submersible pump assembly is attenuated in a first embodiment by adjusting the length of the rotor to position rotor bearings supporting the rotor within the stator at locations of low amplitude vibration. In a second embodiment, hydraulic pressure is applied to a fluid chamber supporting a thrust bearing that supports the rotor. When hydraulic fluid pressure is applied, the thrust bearing and the rotor move axially. Thus, moving the rotor bearings away from areas of high amplitude vibration of the rotor. In a third embodiment, a sliding mass affixed to the motor is moved in response to vibration of the motor. Movement of the sliding mass changes the vibration profile of the motor.

  • Patent number: 8382375
Abstract: A vibration dampening system for a motor shaft in an electric submersible pump ESP uses axially extending arms in one or opposed directions from a fixed portion of a motor shaft bearing. The weights can have their location adjusted to tune the device to the natural frequencies of the rotating shaft and to add an ability to address vibration in more than one plane. Openings are provided in the support for the arms that hold the weight so that arm vibration can create turbulence and improve heat dissipation in the oil for improved bearing life. Bearing cost can be reduced using more economical materials without sacrificing bearing life.

  • Patent number: 8342821
Abstract: A bearing assembly for a submersible pump motor has a bearing body, having a hub, an outer portion, and a plurality of wing portions. The wing portions are spaced apart to form a plurality of cavities in the bearing body. A mass damper is mounted to the hub. The mass damper has an upper portion, a lower portion and mass damper prongs connecting the upper and lower portion. The mass damper prongs are disposed in the cavities, and act to reduce the amplitude of the vibrating frequency of the motor shaft.

  • Publication number: 20090285271
Abstract: A system for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) data communications, and therefore the transceiver that contains the transmitter and the receiver implementing such system, based on Single Carrier Modulation (SCM). The invention includes an efficient vectoring structure that provides novel solution for crosstalk (505 and 506) elimination in SCM systems, which allows the cooperative operation at the transmitter (511) side as well as at the receiver (512) side. The present invention also includes a preamble insertion in a specific location of the transmission path, which makes possible the synchronization, direct channel response (503 and 504) estimation, crosstalk channel responses estimation and noise (507 and 508) estimation in agile manner, to make a continuous tracking of the changes of the channel (503 to 506) and the noise environment (505 to 508). It allows operation with low noise margin.
