Publication number: 20250052616Abstract: Described herein are methods and systems for matching the color of a sample coating to the color of a reference coating. More specifically, described herein are methods and systems for determining an adapted modified sample coating formulation which, when applied onto a substrate, sufficiently matches the color of a reference coating by determining adjusted optical data for each individual color component present within the sample coating formulation and using the adjusted optical data to determine the modified sample coating formulation. Use of the adjusted optical data for each individual color component present within the sample coating formulation within the color adjustment process allows to compensate variations of colorant strength characteristics of colorants in paint production.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 9, 2023Publication date: February 13, 2025Inventors: Guido BISCHOFF, Carlos VIGNOLO

Patent number: 11391631Abstract: Disclosed is a process for determining a plurality of color quality indicators for controlling the color of a coating. Colorimetric coordinates of a color reference and the coating are ascertained for a plurality of coated surface elements using a spectrophotometer at a number of measurement geometries and a number of light sources. For each measurement geometry and each light source, color differences are calculated from the colorimetric coordinates of the color reference and the coating of the plurality of coated surface elements. The respective colorimetric coordinates are normalized with one weighting factor. Each of the plurality of color quality indicators is determined by means of a mapping, of functional values onto a scale value of a predetermined scale. The functional values are determined in each case for the number of measurement geometries and the number of light sources by means of a mathematical relationship.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2018Date of Patent: July 19, 2022Assignee: BASF Coatings GmbHInventors: Carlos Vignolo, Florian Steufmehl

Patent number: 10996110Abstract: A heuristic process for color formula calculation of pigmented shades matched to a target shade, comprising the steps of i) using suitable calibration scales to compile an effect matrix for each of the ingredients included in a coloring system, ii) determining the optical materials parameters of the target shade, iii) selecting a suitable starting formula, iv) determining the color difference between the starting formula and the target shade, v) calculating a first matched color formula while taking account of the effect matrices, vi) repeating steps iv) and v) until an acceptable remaining color difference is reached, wherein the effect matrices are continually updated with shade-relevant information during ongoing operation, achieves an improvement on the existing processes for shade formula calculation, not only in terms of reducing the number of tinting steps needed but also in terms of minimizing the remaining color difference.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 2008Date of Patent: May 4, 2021Assignee: BASF Coatings GmbHInventors: Christian Bornemann, Heiner Cloppenburg, Carlos Vignolo, Jürgen Lohmann, Stuart Kendall Scott
