    Abstract: In one embodiment, a mobile system receives a group identifier for wireless access points associated with a pathway via which the mobile system is to travel. The mobile system receives, during travel of the mobile system along the pathway, beacons from a plurality of wireless access points. Each of the plurality of wireless access points indicates its group identifier in its beacon. The mobile system selects, based on the beacons, a particular access point from among the plurality of wireless access points for roaming, in part by giving preference to any access points in the plurality of wireless access points having a group identifier that matches the group identifier associated with the pathway. The mobile system wirelessly roams to the particular access point.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a device in a wireless network selects a transmission rate for one or more packets to be sent, based on a received signal strength indicator value. The device makes a determination that the one or more packets should be compressed, based on the transmission rate selected by the device. The device applies, based on the determination, stateless offline dictionary compression to the one or more packets, to form a compressed stream of one or more packets. The device sends the compressed stream via the wireless network and using the transmission rate selected by the device.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, a mobile system populates a rate lookup table using sampled data indicative of signal strength measurements, traffic quality of service tags, and transmission rates for wireless communications between the mobile system and one or more access points of a wireless network. The mobile system determines a quality of service tag for traffic to be sent between the mobile system and a particular access point of the wireless network and a signal strength between the mobile system and the particular access point. The mobile system selects, using the rate lookup table, a transmission rate for the traffic to be sent, based on the quality of service tag and the signal strength determined by the mobile system. The mobile system sends the traffic from the mobile system to the particular access point using the transmission rate.

    Abstract: A method of selecting a data transmission rate for transmitting a packet from a transmitting node to a receiving node in a wireless communication system. An updated predictive received signal quality indicator value reflecting signal quality expected to be experienced by the receiving node on the packet received from the transmitting node is obtained, as is a best instance data transmission rate corresponding to a received signal quality indicator sub-range that includes the obtained updated predictive received signal quality indicator value. The packet from the transmitting node is transmitted to the receiving node using the obtained best instance. The transmitting node periodically performs a test procedure wherein a packet is instead transmitted using a test instance selected among the set of instances for the received signal quality indicator sub-range that includes the obtained updated predictive received signal quality indicator value.
