    Abstract: This invention provides a trimeric protein complex that presents an exposed N-terminal coiled-coil domain from the HIV gp41 protein. The preferred embodiment of the invention inhibits membrane fusion mediated by HIV virus. The invention also provides methods to use the trimeric protein complexes as a vaccines to prevent infection by the HIV virus.
