Abstract: A video interface kernel with a defined application program interface includes each of a plurality of core functions for interfacing with video equipment and video processing subsystems. The core functions include such functions as video capture and video output, video recording and playback, and event notification. Functions of the video interface kernel also include video analysis functions and/or interfaces to analysis subsystems, as well as interfaces to point-of-sale terminals, access control systems, and location tracking systems. An intelligent video management module facilitates managing the interactions among the other modules of the kernel, further simplifying the application level interface.

Abstract: A remote purchase controller for a remote purchase electronic payment account has absolute or periodic limits associated with one or more authorized account users. When a remote purchase transaction would exceed the available limit for a requesting user, including any associated over-draft margin, some form of override of the limit is sought, such as by direct override approval or by allocation of at least a portion of the remote purchase transaction amount against another user's limit. If the limit remains, the remote purchase transaction is held until the beginning of a next period, when the transaction may be either automatically executed or submitted for reapproval by the requesting user.

Abstract: For use in an audio playback device capable of recording and playing audio selections, there is disclosed a system and method for recording and playing audio selections in response to user instructions. The system comprises an audio selection controller that is capable of receiving user instructions to record audio selections, identifying audio selections, and recording audio selections on a storage device. The system determines how many times an audio selection is authorized to be played. An audio selection that is not authorized to be played is deleted from the storage device or disabled from playing until an authorization to play the audio selection is received. The system is capable of responding to user instructions to increase or decrease the number of times a particular audio selection is to be played.

Abstract: A remote control system in which a program-up or program-down activation on a control remote device effects the selection of the next or prior available channel that is likely to contain a program of a particular selected genre, or category. The system includes an identification of those programs that are likely to relate to each particular category. When the user selects a category, the user incrementally selects from the programs contained within the selected category. In the system, a list builder includes a number of capabilities for improving the selective quality of the program selection, having access, for example, to an information source that provides the time of each scheduled program on each channel, and an indication of each program's genre, rating, and other related items.
