    Abstract: A manipulator for a surgical instrument may comprise an instrument holder coupled with the surgical instrument and rotatable in a plane that passes through a remote center. The manipulator may also comprise a linkage assembly coupled to the instrument holder to limit motion of the instrument holder to rotation about an axis that intersects the remote center. The linkage assembly may comprise a first linkage arm comprising first and second pulleys. Each pulley may comprise first and second drive tracks which are substantially co-planar. The first linkage arm may also comprise a first drive member section extending between the first drive tracks of the pulleys and a second drive member section extending between the second drive tracks of the pulleys. The first drive member section may be wound around the first pulley in a first direction and the second drive member section may be wound around the first pulley in an opposite direction.

Each of the plurality of rigid links comprises a shaft, a pair of male joint connectors extending axially from a first end of the shaft, and a pair of female joint connectors extending axially from a second end of the shaft opposite the first end. The female joint connectors are complementary to the male joint connectors and are rotated by 90 degrees relative to the male joint connectors. Each of the plurality of rigid links is rotated by 90 degrees with respect to neighboring links among the plurality of rigid links, thereby aligning each pair of male joint connectors with a neighboring pair of female joint connectors to form the pin joints.

    Abstract: A medical system includes a catheter and a vision probe that can be removed from the catheter and replaced with a medical probe. The vision probe can thus be used to steer and pose the catheter, and then be removed and replaced with the medical probe when a medical task such as a lung biopsy is performed. A sensor system in the catheter at least partly measures a pose of the catheter, and control logic controls actuation of the catheter to maintain the desired working configuration when the medical probe is used. A small diameter catheter can thus provide vision and biopsy functionality.

The instrument also includes a main lumen and a pull wire. The system also comprises a sensor to detect a position of the distal tip of the instrument and a computing device that causes the system to record a position of a working configuration of the distal tip, determine, based on a sensor signal, a movement of the distal tip in response to insertion of a probe into the main lumen, and generate a control signal based on the determined movement. The system also comprises a drive interface connected to the pull wire at the proximal section of the instrument. The drive interface adjusts a tensioning of the pull wire based on the control signal to return the distal tip towards the working configuration recorded before the movement occurred.

The actuation mechanism is configured to simultaneously apply a first tension force to a first tension element and a second tension force equal to the first tension force to a second tension element to compress the tube, shortening a length of the tube and creating the rigid state.
