  • Patent number: 9671765
Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a process that assigns a respective priority level to each of a number of tuning algorithms controlling different tunable elements of a communication device. A first tuning algorithm is executed according to a first priority level assigned to the first tuning algorithm. A remaining number of the tuning algorithms are executed to determine whether the first tuning algorithm has affected a tuning state of any of the remainder of tuning algorithms. A second of the number of tuning algorithms is executed in response to a stability condition of the first tuning algorithm and according to a second priority level assigned to the second tuning algorithm. Other embodiments are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6397054
Abstract: A method is provided for communicating emergency messages using non-voice connections. An emergency short message service is added to digital wireless standards, such as GSM-based standards. This service allows users to place an emergency call with the specific purpose of sending an emergency data message using Short Message Service (SMS). Such data messages might include the caller's geographical position, electronic mail messages, or possibly, diagnostic information. As a result, the emergency data messaging will be given the same access conditions as voice emergency calls in a cellular or satellite communications system.

  • Patent number: 6308076
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided which store frequency settings before switching frequencies, for example, before assignment to the traffic channel when switching between a ground station and another mobile station), thus, making it possible to recall the previous frequency setting and then only perform a second pass of the synchronization process or no synchronization at all. By storing the frequency setting, either as an offset to a given frequency or as an absolute frequency for each system to be monitored, the stored frequency setting can be re-used when subsequently monitoring a system.
