    Abstract: An apparatus for preventing injury from a used hypodermic needle. Prior to withdrawal from below the skin, a spring-loaded mechanism is deployed which advances a protective sheath towards the tip of the hypodermic needle. As the needle is withdrawn the protective sheath advances beyond the tip of the needle where a positive locking mechanism positively and irreversibly encapsulates the tip of the needle.
