  • Patent number: 8259592
Abstract: A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) includes a mobility management function and a multihoming function. The mobility management function may implement the Media Independent Handover (MIH) protocol and the multihoming function may implement the Shim6 protocol. The mobility management function may communicate link status information to the multihoming function. Based on the link status information, the multihoming function may accelerate or decelerate a link failure detection procedure, may modify a list of possible paths for consideration for a path exploration procedure, and/or may determine to initiate a path exploration procedure. The multihoming function may communicate to the mobility management function that additional communications resources are required. In response, the mobility management function may activate an inactive radio interface. Subsequent path exploration procedures may include the exploration of paths that may be established over the activated radio interface.

  • Publication number: 20120144062
Abstract: Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are disclosed that provide coordination between MPTCP and mobile IP (MIP). An MPTCP session may be established between a mobile node and a correspondent node. MIP and simple IP subflows may be established in the MPTCP session. The mobile node may activate MIP and establish a first subflow via MIP. The first subflow may be associated with a first path that may be routed through a first home agent. The mobile node may deactivate MIP and establish a second subflow via simple internet protocol (IP). The second subflow may be associated with a second path that is not routed through a home agent.

  • Publication number: 20070115893
Abstract: A method and system for managing radio resources in a time-slotted wireless communication system is based on the quality of service (QoS) information of a user. A plurality of time slots of a radio resource are sorted into a plurality of different categories, such as high QoS time slots, high capacity time slots, and balanced time slots. Each category is associated with a different level of QoS. QoS information with respect to a user is obtained in response to a radio resource request received from the user. The user is associated with a particular category of time slots based on the QoS information of the user.

  • Publication number: 20070104123
Abstract: In a wireless local area network (WLAN) mesh network of clusters, each cluster having a master node with a plurality of associated slave nodes, a method an apparatus for coordinating channel access between the clusters. A structure of clusters is established as a hierarchal mastership, wherein a high level master node serves a plurality of subservient master nodes. The hierarchal mastership is controlled by the high level master node using an HCF controlled channel access (HCCA) mechanism. Alternatively, the structure of clusters is configured as a peer-to-peer mastership that controls channel access by a distributed mechanism, such as EDCA.

  • Publication number: 20070053288
Abstract: Wireless communication method and apparatus for selecting a channel type for a call are disclosed. In a wireless communication system that supports both a basic low speed channel and a special high speed channel, when a call is received from a user, it is determined whether the high speed channel is suitable for the call and preferable for the user. If so, it is determined whether the high speed channel is available. If so, the call is admitted and assigned to the high speed channel. If these criteria are not met, the call is admitted and assigned a low speed channel if an available low speed channel can support the call; otherwise the call request is rejected. After admitting the call, it is continuously determined whether the high speed channel or the low speed channel is best, and the channel type is switched accordingly.

  • Publication number: 20060268715
Abstract: In a wireless communication system comprising a plurality of mesh points (MPs), a method and apparatus for transmitting management information includes a first MP transmitting a management frame to a second MP, wherein the management frame includes the medium access control (MAC) address of a destination MP. The second MP receives the management frame from the first MP and determines if it is the destination MP. The second MP updates the management frame if the second MP determines it is not the destination MP, and transmits the management frame to a third MP. The transmissions terminate when the data reaches the destination MP.

  • Publication number: 20060262737
Abstract: A mesh network includes a plurality of mesh points (MPs), a central database (DB) and a central controller (CC). The MPs are configured to broadcast quality of service (QoS) information over a wireless medium. Each MP may request QoS information directly from at least one other one of the MPs. The MPs store QoS information in the central DB and are configured to query the central DB QoS information associated with any of the MPs. Thus, QoS information is shared throughout the mesh network, and QoS policies are defined and updated where an MP may co-exist with another MP, an MP may co-exist with systems external to the mesh network, and an MP may co-exist with mesh access points (MAPs).

  • Publication number: 20060221998
Abstract: A method and system for performing dynamic link selection (DLS) between transmit/receive units (TRUs). A first TRU determines whether a second TRU has multiple interfaces with a DLS capability. If the second TRU has multiple interfaces with the DLS capability, the first TRU sends a packet to the second TRU through a selected link. The first TRU then receives a report from the second TRU and evaluates quality of the link based on the report. The first TRU selects a link for a new packet in accordance with a predetermined criteria and the quality of the link. If the second TRU does not have multiple interfaces with the DLS capability, the first TRU periodically sends probe packets to the second TRU via all available links. The second TRU sends response packets and the first TRU evaluates the quality of link based on statistics of the response packets.

  • Publication number: 20060218353
Abstract: A method and apparatus for implementing path-based traffic stream (TS) admission control in a wireless mesh network having a distributed and/or centralized admission control architecture is disclosed. When the wireless mesh utilizes distributed admission control architecture, a source mesh point (S.MP) transmits a request for TS admission requiring certain resources/quality of service (QoS). The request propagates through the wireless mesh network until the destination mesh point (D.MP) is reached and an admitted path is determined. If an intermediate mesh point (MP) is unable to meet the requested resources/QoS for the TS, the S.MP is notified. When the wireless mesh network utilizes centralized admission control architecture, a S.MP requests a route to the D.MP from a central controller. The central controller maintains a status of MPs in the wireless mesh network, and selects a best route to handle the TS to satisfy the requested resources/QoS.

  • Publication number: 20060079268
Abstract: A method for congestion control in the uplink of a wireless communication system having a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and a radio network controller (RNC) begins by receiving an interference report for each user. The average noise rise for each user calculated and congestion relieving measures are implemented based upon the average noise rise and the WTRU battery level. A method for congestion control in the downlink of a wireless communication system having a WTRU and a RNC begins by receiving a transmission power report for each user. The transmission power for each user is calculated, and congestion relieving measures are implemented based upon the average transmission power and the WTRU battery level.

  • Publication number: 20060056457
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for confirming the delivery of a data packet in a mesh network by sending an acknowledgement (ACK) to an ingress mesh point (IMP). A mesh network comprises a plurality of mesh points that are wirelessly linked together. A data packet sent by a station (STA) is received by an IMP. A MAC frame is generated for transmission of the data packet and the frame is forwarded to an egress mesh point (EMP) in order to provide a service by the mesh network. The MAC frame includes a field comprising an IMP address and an EMP address. When the EMP, (or optionally an intermediate mesh point), receives a data packet successfully, the EMP or the intermediate mesh point sends an ACK to the IMP or preceding mesh point.

  • Patent number: 7010329
Abstract: A method for battery conservation in a wireless communication system begins with requesting a battery level measurement from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) by a radio network controller (RNC). The battery level is measured at the WTRU and is reported to the RNC. The battery level measurement is stored in the RNC, where it can be accessed by radio resource management (RRM) procedures. The battery level measurement is applied to the RRM procedures by making adjustments to the procedures based on the battery level measurement, whereby the battery of the WTRU is conserved.
