  • Patent number: 6731617
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus providing minimal systems alterations in non-GSM cellular systems wishing to incorporate GSM GPRS messaging capability. This is accomplished by giving a registering terminal or MS an IP address for use in receiving both signaling and traffic data messages rather than using the SGSN as the traffic receiving entity and forwarding traffic to the MS from the SGSN and requiring signaling messages to be transmitted from the MSC to the MS by other means. This approach simplifies the integration of GPRS capability into any non-GSM configuration cellular system by providing a generic way to exchange signaling information between any MSC, having a known IP address, and any MS with an assigned IP address.

  • Patent number: 6198917
Abstract: A method of updating mobility information for a Mobile End System (MES) in a Cellular Digital Packet Data network uniquely identifies a Serving Mobile Data Intermediate System (MDIS) in a ReDirect Request (RDR) so that the Location Update Service (LUS) can complete its location updating operations. Upon attachment of the MES to the Serving MDIS, a RDR is created that includes a LUS address of the Serving MDIS and a Forwarding Service address (FSA) of the Serving MDIS. The RDR is then transmitted to a Home MDIS corresponding to the MES via a network backbone. The Forwarding Service address of the MES is then updated to the Forwarding Service address of the Serving MDIS. Then, the Home MDIS creates an RDC that includes as a destination address the LUS address of the Serving MDIS and transmits to the RDC to the Serving MDIS via the network backbone. Once the LUS operations are complete, data intended for the MES received at the Home MDIS is routed based upon the FSA of the Serving MDIS.

  • Patent number: 6157846
Abstract: An interface device for faxing documents over a wireless network includes circuitry for emulating the public switched telephone network (PSTN) for communicating with an analog fax machine. The circuitry receives and stores a document image from the fax machine. It then prompts a wireless transceiver to establish a call connection. Once a call connection is created to a destination fax through the wireless network the interface device transmits the stored document image. The inventive method includes the steps of communicating with a fax over by means of one protocol to receive a document image, storing the document image, and transmitting the document image by means of a second protocol.
