The chain tensioner is separate from the rear derailleur and can be placed near the pedal crank. The bicycle to which the drivetrain is mounted has a drive chain, and the position of the lower portion of the drive chain (i.e. the portion of the drive chain that is not tensioned from pedaling forces) is elevated relative to that of bicycles with drivetrains having conventional rear derailleurs.
